- As/Is....Exactly
I have to first start off by saying that I absolutely LOVE John Mayer, one of the few talented artists that I have come across in a long time in this day and age. Anyway, on with the review...I have to say that I wasn't too impressed with this CD. Granted, that I listened to these songs like a million times on his other CDs so they do get a little exhausting, but I still love them. The reason why I thought this album was okay was because it really is what it's called. Yes, I know that it's a live CD so it's not suppose to be perfect, but compared to "Any Given Thursday", his other live CD, that was 10 times better. He just sounded so exhausted on half of the songs which, obviously, was because he was on such a long tour, but you would have thought that he would have picked better versions of it during his tour. Also, on "3x5", there is a part where he pauses, which he tends to do so that the crowd could fill in with the singing, and no one did so he had to kind of try and play it off like that was planned. That part was pretty funny, cause like he said, the album is as/is, no editing.

Okay, now that I'm done with the bad parts, here's the good parts..John is awesome at improvising and that is why I love his live CDs. The guitar solos are awesome and is the only reason why I buy the live CDs. I absolutely love the blues set that he does on the first CD and how he then does his own version of the blues with "Come Back To Bed" which then goes into a long guitar solo along with some dialogue, very entertaining. My absolute favorite though from this CD is the Marvin Gaye song that he does with DJ Logic which is "Make Me Wanna Holler" on the second CD. I loved how they both played off eachother in that song and the vocals that assisted him in it, pretty damn awesome to hear. I also love the version of "Home Life" on this CD because it's so autobiographical, he definitely takes you in with that one.

Overall, I loved this CD just because it had a variety of music on it that we're not used to hearing John play. I think that it would be interesting to see him start doing some kind of motown and blues. It seems that he is going in that direction, so it was nice to get a little taste of it on this compilation. Anyway, I highly recommend buying this CD just for that fact and you will definitely enjoy all the little twists that he gives to his own songs. Enjoy!

- as/is fantastic!!
I bought the as/is cd as soon as i saw the link on his website, took a while tho, cos unfortunately i live in scotland and it had to come alllllll the way from the US! but being a faithful mr mayer fan, y'know, i waited n paid the postage!! and let me tell you, it was well worth it! It let me get a wee insight into how amazing a john mayer concert would ever be if he ever got his ass over to the UK anytime soon! both CD's were equally good, with highlights being - only heart, your body is a wonderland (of course!), come back to bed and comfortable, which i wasnt too keen on before, but now i love!! so go buy it! postage is worth it!!

- As advertised...
It took me awhile to warm up to this album, but I think that's mostly due to the fact that I wan't extremely impressed with "heavier things." I am however impressed with the new improvised solos (as always) and I must say that I can't get enough of "blues intro," and "come back to bed." In my opinion, these two tracks made the album. Oh, and I'm a big fan of the album cover art as well!

- Nice. Very nice.
I got As/Is the day it came out.

I was very impressed. I have to admit to being something of a John Mayer fan, myself. My favourite from this is 3x5. A great song done a little differently. A very nice touch. In general, Mayer uses a lot more of his scatting/humming sort of thing. Very nicely, might I add. Neon is nice to be heard accoustically. The staple addition of No Such Thing was a bit dull, I must admit. Very much the same as Any Given Thursday's version. Come back to bed & Homelife were nicely done... with a few "embellishments". Each had a new bridge. Clarity was great. Personally, I felt it was a nice union of the Heavier Things songs with the Room For Squares songs. I felt when first listening to Heavier Things that the songs were very different to Room For Squares, and in the live forum, the songs make more sense to be by the same artist. As such, I have a new appreciation for the Heavier Things album.

And now to criticisms. It would have been nice to have had Daughters on it, especially being the current single. I think it could have been mixed and mastered better, though I'm no expert on this aspect, especially in the live recording field.

Oh well, I bought the live version of Daughters from the As/Is Online Album, from which this whole collection is gathered.
