I'm listening to this CD right now...I randomly select either of the two CDs when I'm in the space for John...Either satisfies completely for individual reasons! This is my FIRST [yes, first] John Mayer CD, though I've heard some of his stuff before. I suppose it was John's appearance on Clapton's Crossroads [Guitar Festival] DVD which REALLY got my attention...John is aglow on stage, full of spirit, young verve and reverence for his gifts and everyone elses...He played alongside some guitar 'legends' and showed himself to be one in the making! Sooo, when I decided I wanted some John Mayer I was grateful to know a LIVE recording existed and picked up the CD As/Is. How wonderful! It really is a lift to hear his music, his words [he likes to engage the audience and isn't afraid to let them know he appreciates them all]...And the audience is as much a part of the CD recordings as everyone else...They give the whole thing an electric sparkle and I can FEEL the Mutual Admiration Society working! ;) John's range, variety and sheer joy in sharing his music is as palpable as it is moving and full of H.E.A.R.T. Bob your head, tap your feet, laugh out loud, dance...Enjoy!
RoCkOn John!
Thanks,
Bead
If you want to buy a live CD from John Mayer, purchase "Any Given Thursday", a double CD also, which is without question much better. If you are a hard core Mayer fan and your looking for a few gems, there are 2 or 3 great versions of songs you already know on this. This is only for the hard core fan, but I am glad I bought it.
I bought the as/is cd as soon as i saw the link on his website, took a while tho, cos unfortunately i live in scotland and it had to come alllllll the way from the US! but being a faithful mr mayer fan, y'know, i waited n paid the postage!! and let me tell you, it was well worth it! It let me get a wee insight into how amazing a john mayer concert would ever be if he ever got his ass over to the UK anytime soon! both CD's were equally good, with highlights being - only heart, your body is a wonderland (of course!), come back to bed and comfortable, which i wasnt too keen on before, but now i love!! so go buy it! postage is worth it!!
It took me awhile to warm up to this album, but I think that's mostly due to the fact that I wan't extremely impressed with "heavier things." I am however impressed with the new improvised solos (as always) and I must say that I can't get enough of "blues intro," and "come back to bed." In my opinion, these two tracks made the album. Oh, and I'm a big fan of the album cover art as well!
I got As/Is the day it came out.
I was very impressed. I have to admit to being something of a John Mayer fan, myself. My favourite from this is 3x5. A great song done a little differently. A very nice touch. In general, Mayer uses a lot more of his scatting/humming sort of thing. Very nicely, might I add. Neon is nice to be heard accoustically. The staple addition of No Such Thing was a bit dull, I must admit. Very much the same as Any Given Thursday's version. Come back to bed & Homelife were nicely done... with a few "embellishments". Each had a new bridge. Clarity was great. Personally, I felt it was a nice union of the Heavier Things songs with the Room For Squares songs. I felt when first listening to Heavier Things that the songs were very different to Room For Squares, and in the live forum, the songs make more sense to be by the same artist. As such, I have a new appreciation for the Heavier Things album.
And now to criticisms. It would have been nice to have had Daughters on it, especially being the current single. I think it could have been mixed and mastered better, though I'm no expert on this aspect, especially in the live recording field.
Oh well, I bought the live version of Daughters from the As/Is Online Album, from which this whole collection is gathered.
