What on earth is Martin Aston yabbering on about up there? Strange Cargo2 was released in 1990 and anyone who knows their shamrocks from their doves will know acid house was dead and buried by the time D-mob's We Call it Acieed hit in 1988. This is a fantastic album, all William's solo albums are, and to say this album is 10 years old it sounds as current as anything out there today and has none of those dated DX7 sounds of a Miami vice track. When I first heard this in 1990 it was the production that blew me away, no one can create space around sounds like Mr. Orbit, if you want to know why Madge needs this man to stay upfront, give this album a listen.
William Orbit is the master of samples and of synthesized sound waves. He has done many soundtracks. Added to these intensely melodic and soothing sound layers is the addictive beat on the dance tracks, and the outer space quality progressive creative electronica of the other tracks. The other reviewer probably said it best. So I would add that a review can't possibly give justice to this music because of its raw creativity and intense listenability and addictiveness (if this is your cup of tea).
The album is roughly in two parts, the dance tracks and the space rock instrumentals (not really, but I don't know what to call it- indescribable- mentally stimulating while relaxing also). Orbit and Strange Cargo II has what once was referred to as the edge. Compared to other electronic music, I would almost go so far to say this is the only one truly with the edge. SC1 and 3 are also way up there too. This album and CD is THE pinnacle of twentieth century electronic music. If you like soundtrack compositions like I do, that is an extra bonus also since these are his best sounds. But mainly this stands out on its own merits, nothing to do with soundtracks really. Far above.
