This is UFO's 20th studio album, and it's hardly the sound of a band fading quietly away. Instead it's just as vital and rocking as the stuff they were doing in the late 70's and early 80's.
Phil Mogg's vocals still sound as clear and strong as ever, and Vinnie Moore throws down some serious guitar work here. There are several standout tracks on this release...my favorites are "Saving Me", "Hell Driver" and "Rock Ready"...all great bluesy classic rock tracks.
I first saw UFO live in 1978 (with Michael Schenker playing lead guitar) on the 'Obsession' tour and have been a diehard fan ever since. UFO has changed guitarists and lineups along the way, but have always put out great music. Now with the original core of Mogg-Parker-Raymond, along with guitar master Vinnie Moore, they are still putting out great music and putting on great live shows.
I've got tickets to see these guys when they come around in October on tour. Looking forward to hearing some of these songs live, especially "Saving Me". These guys still rock, and they can still rock out the live shows, so get this disc and go see them live! Long live UFO!
I've been a fan of this band since the mid 70s. Back then they were creating some great music at a time where you only had so many bands to choose from, and IMO UFO laid the foundation for what eventually became the melodic rock genre. The 70s era culminated with the double live "Strangers In The Night", one of the best live albums of the 70s. After that, they struggled for a period of time with many line up changes and inconsistency. Yet like a fighter getting off the canvas at 9, UFO gets up punching with "The Visitor". The musicianship and vocals being top notch is a no brainer, as we're talking real musicians playing real music here. What is a nice surprise is how good the songs are. Far more bluesier than anything they've done in the past, there are a slew of good songs on this CD:
Saving Me
Helldriver
Rock Ready
Can't Buy A Thrill
Villans & Thieves (my fav)
Stranger In Town
I've also seen them live and this band is lethal, performing not only a few newer cuts but all the old favorites as well. The three original members (Phil Mogg, Andy Parker and Paul Raymond) are joined by Vinnie Moore on guitar and Rob Deluca on bass. Vinnie is an incredible guitar player and fits in well with UFO as he can easily play all of Schenker's leads but also plays within the scope of the newer material. Rob is a skilled bass player who throws off a great vibe during the performance and does Pete Way justice on all the older stuff. You will get more than your money's worth if you go see these guys!
The mature voice of Phil Mogg comes through again on this latest effort. Of course, he's got the help of a great supporting cast. If you liked "You are Here", and "Monkey Puzzle" this is right up your alley.
Solid album, have been listening to the new cd for over a week now and I can't find a weak track on the cd, favorite song on the cd is "Villains & Thieves" if you like the cd's "You Are Here" and "The Monkey Puzzle" you'll like this cd.
This album ROCKS. I really liked You Are Here, but was a little disappointed with Monkey Puzzle. Thankfully, The Visitor hasn't let me down. I can't wait to see UFO again in October, 2009. If you like UFO buy this album now!
