Twista came out in Chicago in the early 90's with several interesting albums including
from 1997, which is the reason why this album is named like it is. Twista remarkably fast flow was listed in Guinness Book of Records as the fastest in the world, a record he later lost but in mainstream he is still the fastest rapper and it works excellent for funny cameos on other artists albums and that's what he's mostly famous for. However, in 2003 Twista appeared on Kanye Wests's #1 single "Slow Jamz" and completely stole the show with his rapid tongue delivery, West also produced another song for Twista called "Overnight Celebrity" #6 and when his album
was released that year there was more interest for Twista then ever before, he also appeared on songs by R. Kelly, Faith Evans and Anthony Hamilton and Twista had successfully became integrated into the A list of Rap artists. Personally I think he works best with commercial Hip Hop songs with alot of swagger, not so much the darker hardcore songs. In the recent few years I heard a bit less of him and his album
wasn't too hot, but his work on Bone Thug-n-Harmony's album was good and he'll be touring with them aswell. My expectations on "Adrenaline Rush 2007" would be more hit potential, hopefully some really good productions to make that possible. How does this one measure up? Read on to find out.
This album got everything I was hoping it wouldn't have. That is the usual annoying songs from mainstream Hip Hop these days. Plenty of songs about his "street credability" (No Pistols, I Aint That N*gga, Seven Day Hustle, Charged, Trouble) Women songs with very explicit lyrics (Say, Say, Pimp Like Me, Love Rehab with R. Kelly) Club songs like (Wrist Stay Rocky, Whip Game with Lil Wayne and Creep with T-Pain) The R. Kelly doesn't sound like everything else here but, but it sounds like something better suited for his last album cause Twista sound more like a guest artist then everything else. On the "Come Out" Twista's voice was slowed down and he's rapping in slow motion, diffrent but not too cool. The same tecnique is used on Whip Game and Wrist Stay Rocky but only as the hook. The Neptunes song "Give It Up" is b-grade club song and sound like the typical lazy Neptune song these days. The standout is however "Ain't No Hoes" with really strong smooth production and Bone Thugs-n-Harmony appearing, it reminds me of a song from their last album
called "C-Town". It's about not messing with them.
Overall, We get more of the same and it ends up sounding like almost every other Hip Hop album these days, without a real album concept, no vision and more of the usual themes (streets, women, clubs). I'm also dissapointed at the production that I find quite boring. Very Few hits singles for radio actually but instead we get some bad collaborations with R. Kelly, Lil Wayne and T-Pain (only Snoop was missing to make this a perfect 10!) Some songs sound like 1993 others with that annoying slow down voice and far too many explicit songs dealing with the usual stuff. Don't get me wrong I like Twista and for that reason I was hoping for something better cause he's one of a kind and deserved a better fortune that he got. Unfortunately this isn't the case with this album and I would only recommend it to die hard Twista fans.
Let me start off by saying that Twista's potential to be something great surfaced when he came out with Adrenaline Rush. Adrenaline Rush was a classic but the quality of his albums started to decline starting with Kamikaze. The Day After was garbage and now we're here. This album sounds like Kamikaze and The Day After copulated and had a premature baby by the name of Adrenaline Rush 2007. For starters the production is most handled by Toxic, whose production can only be described as predictable.
The Good: Aint No Hoes featuring Layzie Bone and Krayzie Bone is the best song on the album period. I Aint That N**** is somewhat like the old school Twista and Charged was an okay album starter. Creep Fast is cool and even though Im not fond of T-Pain, he did that hook some justice. Love Rehab feat R Kelly is the type of joint that Double Up should have sounded like. It consists of Twista busting some decent verses for that significant other while R Kelly sings his heart out.Trouble is an average joint but its better than most of the other songs Im about to mention.
The Bad: The first single, Give It Up feat Pharell is catchy but its forgettable and Pharell's awful verse partly why. Say Say(feat Jazze Pha and Big Zak) is yawn-inducing. Speed Knot Mobstaz are getting worse and it shows in No Pistols and The Come Up is a boring screwed song with a chessy wannabe exotic. The skits are stupid attempts to recreate the original skits off Adrenaline Rush.
The Ugly: Whip Game Proper(feat Lil Wayne) sucks off that Lil Wayne mixtape I heard it off of and its sucks now plus that beat sounds like they jacked an ice cream truck. Seven Day Hustle is corny and the sampling of The Shirrells is grating and the Galaga sounding Wrist Stay Rocky is the obligatory ode to ice that fails miserably. Pimp Like Me is humorously bad and sounds like an electronic dance record gone wrong.
Bottom Line: Twista's Adrenaline Rush 2007 is another dud by a rapper who is capable of much better work. The production was bland, the guests(with the exceptions of Cee-Lo, T-Pain and Bone Thugs N Harmony)were weak and Twista sounded like he was bored most of the time. To call a lukewarm album Adrenaline Rush 2007 as if it was a continuation of Adrenaline Rush when its really a continuation of The Day After is a slap in the face to anybody who remembered how great Adrenaline Rush was. Twista's hunger ended with Kamikaze. Let's face it, Twista doesnt have what it takes to make a good album anymore.
I bought this cd thinking maybe Twista went back to his roots like the old AR (Adrenaline Rush) album. I was wrong, this cd is a great example of what happens to lyricist who come up with a style from the underground, change their style after getting popular, then try to "fix" an older album. To me the older AR album was from top to bottom off the charts, this "improved addition" of the album in my opinion is trash. One song on the album thats any good and thats the ""Creep Fast" feat. T-Pain. Twista has changed alot through the years but all the while staying the same in certain aspects. His lyrics are still tight but are now too repetitive, his flow is still tight but now his beats have fallen to the low. I like Twista and being a lyricist myself I have alot of respect for him but this is by far the worse cd he has ever made. In my opinion if you like the same old tracks about money and cars, don't care what the beat sounds like, and don't expect to be impressed then this is a great cd for you, otherwise save yourself the money and if you want a fast rapping cd thats tight and shows somebody going back to their roots try Strength & Loyality by Bone Thugs.
Twista was one of my hands down favorite artists ever since the original "Adrenaline Rush". I nearly melted that disk in my old Sony CD Player and have since bought AT LEAST 4 new copies of that album (I tend to lose CDs).
Unfortunately, ever since the original A.R. Twista's albums have gotten worse and worse (except for Mobstability which wasn't a solo effort). They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I must be insane because I keep buying Twista's CDs expecting tight beats and his unique flows - instead I get watered-down beats and flows that are mediocre at best.
I hope his next effort is even half the CD that the original Adrenaline Rush was, this one wasn't even a tenth. If I lose this CD - I'm definitely NOT buying another.
Twista returns to his roots of the Chicago streets with Adrenaline Rush 2007. Using guests artists who serve as more than hype for the album, Twista spits hot fire with this album. Probably not as good as Kamikaze, but definitely one of my new favorites.
