It seems as if these guys have finally come full circle, and not a moment too soon. There's no doubt about TOTO's excellent musicianship, and while Kingdom of Desire was a decent album by some standards, it wasn't TOTO. Tambu was a huge step in the right direction, and now Mindfields... The re-addition of Bobby Kimball is the best thing that's happened to this band in awhile. This album is up there with TOTO IV as far as Kimball albums go. If you are a TOTO fan, you can't pass this one up. If you've never heard of TOTO (like many of the younger music fans around the U.S.), this album is as good as any to get acquainted with this awesome group. It's too bad that promotion in the US has basically been non-existant - TOTO deserves more. This is an album that has grown on me with each listening. My favorite tracks: Mad About You, Caught in the Balance, Cruel, Melanie
I have been a fan of TOTO for many years and haved enjoyed their music. Altough one ot two of their albums may have not been up to my expectations of the vocal and musical talent of the group,Mindfields is by far one of the best by TOTO in the groups long and rewarding career. From Caught in the Balance to Melanie, TOTO shows their fans that they can still deliver top notch music.
From the terrifc lyrics to Steve's amazing guitar playing Mindfields gives TOTO fans a CD worth listening to again and again.
I must say that I just recently purchased this CD. (late 2004) After a couple of years of being force-fed "hit music" that has preprogrammed drum beats and three notes, and witnessing "The Ashley Simpson Incident" on Saturday Night Live, it's refreshing to hear some musicians that can really play their instruments! I played this for my teenage children and they could even recognize that this was something special. (There really is hope for our youth.) My hope is that an album like this will inspire a young musician to really try to master their instrument, instead of seeking to glorify incompetence.
If you are as sick to death as I am of the soul-less, heart-less, talent-less, non-creative, poke-you-in-the-eye, slap-you-in-the-face, pants-dropping, midriff-baring, tongue-splitting, body-piercing, chain-swinging, beret-wearing GARBAGE that passes for popular music these days, you will be so thankful to hear some great music by this classic group. If this album had been released in the late 70's or early 80's, it would have been a mega-hit. Has the definition of truly great music changed, or is the recording industry just completely artistically and intellectually broken and bankrupt? I'm betting on the latter. The music on this album is as perfect and polished as one would ever expect from this group. Great listening! Pick it up!
I'm not sure why some others on here have said this cd lacks texture or melodies?. This has all those and more. Bobby Kimble adds to the overall great vibe this cd puts out. It's tastefully done from start to finsh. I'd even go as far as to say it's one of thier best. Simon Phillips was a great replacement for Jeff and his abilities continue to shine through his playing by playing what's needed and nothing more. The guitar work is wonderfully written, again only playing to enhance not overpower. The keys provide great textures and melodies. A FAN tastic cd, BUY IT!!.
