"Tangines Scales" is one of those all-too-common Tangerine Dream releases which offers a compilation from half a dozen albums with a single additional track that has not been previously unreleased (at least officially). Most of the material on this 2007 release is drawn (almost) unaltered from albums of spanning about twenty years: one track from each of "
" (1986), "
", "
" (both 1988) and "
" (1994), together with a couple from each of "
" (1983), "
" (1989) and "
" (2000). The 'new' track is an instrumental version of 'House of the Rising Sun', which to my ears at least sounds to have been recorded at the London Astoria concert of April 2007 (for all that it is dubbed '[Southend Mix]' on the track listing) or else prepared in the studio in preparation for the band's tour that year.
For those new to Tangerine Dream without these albums already in their collection, the release may hold some interest; for established long-term fans it offers nothing new at all and smacks more of a marketing ploy than of anything else -- something to which, of course, long-term fans are well used. I suppose we should be grateful nothing has been tampered with and the tracks can be enjoyed in the original splendour!
A nicely put together selection from a range of their work, from movies and studio alike... one I can pull out any time I want to hear TD but can't make up my mind.
