First off if you hated the opera style vocals of Inferno and Purgatorio you won't like this concluding disc either.Second of all if you're a fan of classic Tangerine Dream music like Phadera you probably won't like the idea of an orchestra and singers.Third of all if you only have time to listen to this in bits and pieces it severely dillutes its spellbinding effect. If however you,ve stuck with this everchanging group throughout the years as they branched out in different directions this is a satisfying new direction though admitedly not to everyone's taste.Six singers,an orchestra(the orchestra parts are actually toned down from the live performance)flesh out Edgar Froese's surrreal compositions based on Dante.Don't expect the excitement of Jeanne D'arc but just enjoy this long gorgous aural journey that even non opera lovers may appreciate.Traditional TD fans should seek out the new 3 track cd Roadmap 40 years of music. Those who appreciate this group trying new approaches to music shouldn't pass this up though.
Finally, the Dante project of Edgar Froese has come to an end. Paradiso is the final set of disks to this project and I would not call it a Tangerine Dream album. It is an Edgar Froese album, pure and simple. Jerome is not on the disk and he is SORELY missing. This album lasts an eternity and rarely has any spark, fire, or energetic emotion. I can see why Jerome wanted no part to this debacle. He did not appear at any of the performances of Paradiso.
There are a couple of good tracks on Paradiso but the incredible lenghth of this album (2+ hours!) will mean that it hardly ever gets listened to.
The synths that are so characteristic of Tangerine Dream are virtually absent as there is an orchestra that are the main performers. I really would not have guess that this was Tangerine Dream had I not known in advance.
Hopefully, they can recover from this and regroup with Jerome to produce something better.
This is a difficult review to write since I believe I have a defective disk(s). Basically, the songs do not play in order and disk 1 & 2 appear to be reversed judging from the number of songs and titles. However, this will not stop me from writing a review since all songs do play and I can manually choose the order correctly. I was scared for this project when it started with Inferno a few years back. I really did not like that album that much and felt it was really going to go downhill from there. Purgatorio was an excellent recovery and gave me hope. After listening to this, the third part of La Divina Commedia, I can only appreciate more and more what an outstanding project it is. It should be noted that Jerome Froese does not perform on this CD and that does take away some of the bite that was on Purgatorio. From what I understand, he was just not interested in this project anymore. I typically don't like "song by song" reviews that some people post on Amazon and in a case like this, I think it would really take away from the overall feel of the CD. It flows beautifully from song to song. I would rate this second of the trilogy but just barely behind Purgatorio and way ahead of Inferno
Dante's Paradiso is a complete gem put together by the multitalented and musically eclectic Edgar Froese. He has always been the mastermind and musical wizard behind Tangerine Dream. Paradiso resonates with operatic vocals and poignant music. It is just as good as Tangerine Dream's dynamic Inferno CD. Edgar Froese has composed experimental, techno, new age, ambient, rock, classical and musical soundtracks of the utmost quality. He plays myriad keyboard instruments and stellar guitar. Froese is a mysical and spiritual composer. He is also a pacifist vegetarian who writes and composes music about universal peace in a very profound way. Paradiso will mesmerize you and musically fortify you. A very creative undertaking.
The trilogy based on La Divina Comedia is complete with this 2006 release, as Edgar Froese's artistic vision weaves into the realm of classical music.
Recorded on January 18 and 19, 2006, in the Hans-Otto Theatre, Potsdam, Froese utilizes the Brandenburg Symphonic Orchestra - Michael Helmrath, conductor - to express the 15 pieces. The TD lineup is Froese and Thorsten Quaesching on keyboards, Linda Spa (flute) and Iris Camaa (congas), who are the guides in this 2-CD chronicle. As with the other parts of the work, vocalists - Fridolin Johann Harms, Bianca Acquaye, Barbara Kindermann, Saskia Klumpp, Tatjana Kusheva, Jayney Klimek - play an integral role.
The ambitious project ends with a soundscape of incredible dimensions.
