Ok, so I was a huge fan of say anything's first cd and have been waiting for this album for a couple of years now. At first I have to admit that I thought this album kinda sucked. It is very different than .....Is A Real Boy. But as it goes with many cd's, and this one for sure, the more you listen, the more you will like it. The lyrics are great as you would expect from Max and he brings in pretty much everyone involved in the Pop Punk scene today, to do some guest work, including Chris from Saves the Day, Kenny from The Starting Line, and like 15 others. Theres a couple songs that I skip over but out of 27 Id say that at least 22 are great so thats a pretty good ratio. If you have not heard much Say Anything, I would tell you to get their first cd before this but if you are a fan then I totally recommend this cd. Give it 5 spins before you rate it and you will see how awesome it gets. One thing I wish they had more of on this cd, are the gang vocals which is one reason why I loved the first album more, but still over all, this cd is pretty sweet. Pick it up and let it grow on you like a chia!
...Is A Real Boy was such an amazing album I didn't really know what to expect from In Defense of The Genre. Especially since Say Anything has gotten much bigger since the release of their first album...But WOW this album blew me away! Every song is incredible and the diversity of the tracks is just...WOW. In my Eyes Max is the greatest songwriter of our generation, the raw emotion he puts into every song is unbelievable. Buy This album and just listen and you will be blown away...
This album is great! I do agree it take a few listens to really get, unlike their previous work which just sort of speaks to you and then never shuts up! Max is a phenomenal songwriter and lyricist, and after seeing them live twice in one week, (both shows in FL on the myspace tour) I have to say that Say Anything has the potential to be a band that stays around for a long time to come and will have a huge following! Not that they aren't already huge for the fans that know them and their previous work, but the music and lyrics on this record far surpass anything that they have done before and will be considered, at least in my opinion, to be some of their most prolific work ever!
The music so diverse it is hard to say what genre they are, but that is what makes them so great! I recommend the second half of both cd's first, tracks 9 to the end are the best! Not to say that first half of each is not great and they will grow on you for sure, but to begin with, those tracks that I mentioned will blow your mind!
This is my favorite band in the whole world! I recently ordered four of their cds off of Amazon new, and I thought that since this cd was made in 2004,(I think)I thought there would be no way this cd could come to me new. But I got this and three other cds each in their original packaging, for cheaper then buying from the store. I am a happy consumer :)
Say Anything is amazing. I liked "Is a Real Boy" better, but this album is more experimental and unique, so it's definately worth listening to.
