This is now my all-time favourite Sarah McLachlan song! The song topped the Billboard Singles Sales chart when it was released. Her voice is so beautiful and serene and brings all the meaning into the song just like her previous hits "Angel" and "I Will Remember You". Though in some parts of the song her vocals are partly overshadowed by the music, together they make this song perfect. You can call it Celtic, rock, new age, pop, or even R&B. It's a great, unusual creation. As usual Sarah McLachlan experiments with several music sequences like drums, vocals, Celtic violins, and fantastic beats like she has done before in "Building A Mystery", "Fear", and "Into The Fire". Though it's an original (one-of-a-kind) creation, Sarah McLachlan fans will love it! In a way it's still a romantic song though the love found in "...the arms of an angel" is replaced by `peaceful protests' similar to "Possession" and her other earlier hits or even in one of her later love themed hits like "I Will Remember You" when she sings the chorus, "Fallen, I have sunk so low..." As usual the lyrics reveal the true Sarah McLachlan within. It's like Alanis Morissette only with great beats and mixed experimental music replacing the alternative sounds, a serene voice replacing Alanis' angst, and lyrics that even men can relate to. I could really relate to these lyrics. It's something almost everyone can relate to. From the symbolic opening line, "Heaven bend to take my hand..." to what I thought was the most striking sentence in the song, "It's the bitter taste of losing everything, I've held so dear...I've fallen"-the lyrics in this song are definitely meaningful. All in all in it's a great song, my current favourite, and it's (well) irresistible! Especially for fans of Joni Mitchell, and other similar artists!
I am a sucker for Tom Lord-Alge's mixes of Sarah's songs and this was the reason I purchased this CD. His radio mix of "Fallen" is better than the original and it's worth the price of this CD alone. As for the other tracks, the live version of "Answer" is lovely and the piano version of "Hold On" is excellent as well (despite the fact that this song is on "The Freedom Sessions").
Go for the remix! I love Sarah's vocals on this track, they're so haunting, so when I first heard about a remix I was hoping for a lot. And I must say, this mix was all it should be, with simple beats with chilling vocals leading up to a dance anthem feel near the end! It's too bad that this mix isn't available on any cd single to date, only white label records, but there are many downloadable versions on-line. Try searching google. And remember, downloading is illegal if the song is released, so buy this mix when it comes out on a cd!
