This is as good a compilation of Roy's Sun recordings as I have seen. It contains the usual rockabilly classics ("Ooby Dooby, " "Rockhouse," "Go Go Go," "Domino") and tape echo-drenched ballads ("I Never Knew" and "Devil Doll") that give indication of where Roy was heading, stylistically. The sound is good, and happily, free of the ill-advised overdubs done later, after Roy's star had risen at Monument in the 60s. Of particular interest is the inclusion of a handful of solo demo recordings featuring Roy and guitar working on some original tunes. These are half-baked gems, giving a fascinating glimpse into his creative mind during these formulative years. "Claudette" a song that became a hit for the Everlys (and later recorded by Roy on MGM) is here in a very raw demo version. Ever-present is the classic Sun studio slapback that gives an eerie glow to Roy's sensitive vocal style throughout.
Roy was not exactly a rockabilly hellcat but a good number of tunes rock solidly and the sound is quite unique, compared to the wild macho sound of Billy Lee Riley and Johnny Burnette.
My only complaint for this package is the absense of proper annotation or musician credit. Still, with 25 tracks, this is an essential purchase.
