Credible Chaykovskiy...

This 2000 Naxos issue is entirely acceptable and satisfactory featuring highly credible performances by a lesser-known Eastern European ensemble (the New Haydn Quartet, Budapest).

The sound is fairly dry (sans reverb) and the miking mid-range.

Tchaikovsky's cosmopolitan style is on display here with correctly abstract consideration of the genre. Still, Beethoven's influence is evident (as with the Quartets of Arensky and Glier): these works may have a closer sonic affinity to Dvorák than Borodin.

The famous Andante of course made Tolstoy weep (December, 1876).
