Given the current high prices for the SACD version, I decided to give the remastered CD version a try until I can find the SACD at a price I'm willing to pay (I own the original CD release).

The remastered CD is an improvement in clarity and detail over the original version. My only complaint is that the very end of the last track the last beat has been softened on the remaster. The last beat on the original is a bit more punctuated, sounds more appropriate to the song, and is more satisfying. The last beat on the remaster just seems to die.

Given the fairly low price of the remastered CD, I consider it a worthwhile upgrade to the original CD release (I'll be keeping both, however).

I had the cassette or vinyl to this album, but had long ago lost/misplaced it.

Time had caused me to forget how stunning & moving this is.

While "Shock The Monkey" received most of the pop airplay, there is far more to this album. I cannot think of a better opening track on any album as "The Rhythm of the Heat". This song introduces a thematic & varied use of percussion, both real and echoed. "San Jacinto" is mournful and powerful, with Gabriel's voice driving you to grieve.

The primitive sounds in "The Family and the Fishing Net" capture the essence of the story of the song.

While his work on "So" is more commerical & melodic, I believe Gabriel's artistry reaches a different level in Peter Gabriel 4.

I'm glad I rediscovered this -- it is one of my top all time albums. Brilliant.

I'm only going to comment on the sound quality of the album. To sum it up, the remastered version is a great improvement over the original CD release. Vocals are much clearer as well as the background instruments. I'm not sure if you will hear more subtleties that were not audible in the original release. Treble has been cleaned up and the bass levels have been boosted slightly so that if you have a set of good full range speakers you will not need a subwoofer. If you have a nice system (mine cost a few thousand) I think you will enjoy this re-issue. If you have a "home theater in a box" or convert the album to MP3 (or iTunes) I doubt that you will notice much difference.

The remaster of this disc is absolutely incredible. I was never pleased with the sound of the first release and I have to say, this disc sounds incredible! Worth replacing your older copy for this one. Not to mention the record kicks ass.

To be a Peter Gabriel fan, you have to expect the unexpected but know it will be musically brilliant. This album has been out for many years but it still sounds refreshing to the listening ear. It is worthy to have in your music collection.
