Everything that is connected with the music of Sigmund Romberg is wonderful,But it would be much better if the singers would be the original singers from the movies.
This disc sounds terrible. That is not why it has five stars. It admits things that have been denied about Broadway for over 90 years, and is historically important. Joseph Toner can be heard on one of the albums noted below.
Romberg was the major composer for the "Shubert Organization" for his entire lifetime. The Ultimate Sigmund Romberg from Amazon is the perfect means to uncover the connection of the greatest hits of the Shuberts, What they are currently doing to cover themselves for their abuses of our theatre artists, and much of life of "JOSEPH TONER, BROADWAY LEGEND".
It has taken time, but downloaded code of inquiries into Joseph Toner, have been evaluated by specialists in Internet security, and Google, either with or without the knowledge of the IMDb, altered the results of searches to provide false results, and inadvertently proved that the name "Frank Hornaday" was "Joseph Toner" in 1943. Google also disabled the ability to conduct a "safe search"--but only for this investigator at first, (now for all investigators anywhere using the term "Joseph Toner"). The documentation we obtained over time is needed to recover the history of JOSEPH TONER, or any other major performers that the Shuberts have decided they did not want discovered.
Since the IMDb has revealed that THEY have more information in their "backfiles" of just about everyone. We have demanded that since they have the information that they should put together a true history of Joseph Toner, rather that having us dig to put it together a piece at a time.
What we can say is that when we have checked the properties of a claim, if it does not come up clean, that is directly from the backfile of a principal in a show, such as Romberg, Donnelly, A. M. Willner, or others of a particular production, or if a search of the National Theatre has not come up without any "caveats". As per the documentation of how Google does it's searches, the fact that Joseph Toner served in the National Theatre, has nothing to do with any result at all. None. They are separate searches added together.
Furthermore, in terms of the downloaded documentation of the 1943 Blossom Time, what the National Theater had in it's imbedded information, which the Shubert organization has had a year to remove, and has enlisted Google to spy on ME, in particular, but not exclusively.
For example, " A Concerned Fan" wrote his own opinion, with which I had some disagreement, as to the identity of Joseph Toner in the Three Musketeers. This person had his computer fail, and asked to use this one to write AMAZON and to vote on what he wanted. His votes were NOT accepted by Amazon. This can only mean that they used tracing to a particular computer. I cannot say who.
(He turned out to be right on second look at the documentation, but that is a different review.) Google makes decisions on whether to answer depending on if it is I who was asking. After collecting enough documentation, it made no difference at all, and Google anywhere denies the truth regarding Joseph Toner, and we have the Ad Executives, at least two of them, that have done the hacking.
What else did the code say? For example, in 1943, the name HORNADAY was really "JOSEPH TONER". PERIOD. I won't explain how the code worked, but I understood it perfectly. THAT ENDS THE DISCUSSION ON WHO WAS THE LEAD IN THE 1943 Student Prince. In the National Theatre, the name Hornaday with Everett Marshall, was from April 12 through April 17th. Frank Hornaday was listed next to Everett Marshall, who was playing lead, and in this case, the next leading position would be Shobert. In 1941, when Joseph Toner was screened for The Student Prince, he came up as being in the play with Joseph Macaulay, a very common pseudonym for him, and further reliable documentation demonstrates that he was playing Everett Marshall's part, that of Dr. Engel. As stated, Joseph Toner took over when Mr. Marshall could not perform. Later that year Alex Alexander was in the play, a now known non-entity. (except as a friend of Allan Jones)
Romberg right from the first search, said the Joseph Toner was in the 1924 Student Prince. Romberg at IMDb now states that in his files Joseph Toner was in well, at least ONE of the original two Maytimes!
The Student Prince on this album is the English Cast. The names of Marlowe and Coast, are still used by the IBDB to say they are from the American Cast! They were not even in the country!
The IMDb knows all, and could tell us if it so chose. I say speak UP! The documentation is now strong enough to bring to a senator, and have the Shuberts prosecuted. And Google too. Wake UP GOOGLE, AND GET YOUR PEOPLE OUT OF MY BACKYARD, as you are STALKING ME!
I urge everyone to check the "Artists Supporting Art in Education" for Demon Ferret's post of her artwork and think if that person is the same as my photo! Amazon seems to think so too! Just because others are working on Joseph Toner's legacy does not mean that each does not have their own right to an opinion.
For the first time, not even found on the Romberg databases or the "IBDB", is the "Blossom Time" "revival" of 1923! This was not a revival, as the New York Times uncovered the new cast that Romberg mentions playing "Blossom Time" at the "Century Theatre" in 1922! "Joseph MENDELSSON", was discovered playing Von Schwind, filling in. The New York Times states Joseph was forced to use a false last name! Later it was discovered that "Joseph Mendelson" was just filling in, as two full casts with one of them headed by "Joseph Mendelson", had both been playing "The Century Theatre". New York was in an uproar. The Shuberts closed for a few months, and the casts opened in two theatres in 1923 after a short break to let things cool down.
Now our claims have new documentation from the very hackers themselves! We have confirmation from the alteration of code by Google, that all of the sites confirm that Joseph Toner's pseudonym was Joseph Mendleson, as Google changed the search from Joseph Toner to Joseph Mendelson on its own, and thought we would not download the code change! It decided that Joseph Toner was in Blossom Time under that pseudonym from 1921-1923! Then he took the lead in the "other" 1923 Blossom Time as revealed in the New York Times. It won't be found on any website, that's for sure!
The reason for the 1938 cast, mentioned in the album, was that there was a long Transcontinental Tour with Everett, for whom Joseph Toner was Everett's understudy for the lead, and often played it. Everett was not a well man. Mr. Marshall suffered from severe depression, which at the time was a severe taboo. "Joseph Toner" was a good friend to him and kept what we now know is nothing to be ashamed of, and very common. "Joseph Toner" stayed up nights with Mr. Marshall at times, when he felt too suicidal to be left alone.
Most important, "Joseph Toner" kept "Everett Marshall's secret for him, rather than gain by it. He did not condemn him for his difficulties, and saved his life. THERE IS NO WAY that Mr. Marshall would ever go out on tour without Joseph Toner along with him. NONE. LOOK through the "National Theatre" Database for "Everett Marshall's name from 1938 onward. ANYPLACE it is mentioned, and I have a recent copy, "Joseph Toner" was present. The tour was not supposed to return. They did not leave until late in 1938, and were back before year's end. The revival was short as Everett was too ill. This is not a criticism of Everett Marshall. Given that treatment was so primitive at the time, Everett Marshall was lucky to find Joseph Toner to count on.
This is also the reason that they did not record Everett IN 1938 for the 1938 revival.
They went out again, for about 15-18 weeks a year, returning to a theatre in Brooklyn in 1942. The tour was such a success, they went out again with "Joseph Toner", whom Everett needed, singing "Blossom Time", and "The Student Prince". This time, they returned triumphant, though Everett was weak. He could not perform on Opening night for "Blossom Time". And now we are full circle with the 1943 Revivals. Besides the code, the photo of the 1943 Revival of the lead in the Student Prince is Joseph Toner. Period.
I do not believe for one minute that they did not record the 1943 revival. I have a recording of that time, and guess who sounds just like Joseph Toner, singing two parts, with a photo that could look like Joseph Toner from stage, though it was from radio? None other than Earl Wrightson, who amazingly wasn't supposed to be singing opera around that time! Joseph Toner was in the 1931 Revival of Blossom Time, even known to have been recorded, where is it?
And why not record the original Blossom Time? They have Maytime? Why not our Student Prince? We discovered that Eugene Martinet, never existed or worse, died in WWI, and went forgotten. The Shuberts reported to the New York Herald that Martinet was wounded in the infantry at Mt. Falcon during WWI. Mt. Falcon was an attempt to build a summer White House out west during WWI! This claim by the Shuberts is a disgrace to any man or woman who has fought for our country!
Romberg, Donnelly's, and others' sites have admitted that "Joseph Toner" was in the original "The Student Prince", and all its revivals, and in all the known revivals of Blossom Time, except 1926.
"Joseph Toner" was singing the famed "25th anniversary tour" of "Blossom Time" after the SECRET the 1945 Broadway Revivals of BOTH THE STUDENT PRINCE AND BLOSSOM TIME, and Joseph Toner was in both of them. Both had RAVE reviews, and one would wonder why those casts were not recorded?
Joseph Toner, as per additional playbills, was in the Blossom Time that forced the National Theatre; OUR National Theatre to Desegregate or close--and to our shame, it closed. But it is our great theatre artists, like "Joseph Toner, Broadway Legend" and many others, stood up and were counted, to do the right thing, in one of the first national civil rights protests. The Shuberts then fired "Joseph Toner."
The culpability of the Shuberts is clear, and worse, they are covering up their hatred for people of color.
I personally wrote to President Obama on Memorial Day that at least I would mourn for Eugene Martinet that day, whose sacrifice may have gone ignored to abuse his art. In any case, a reporter asked "Why is an opera star playing a bit part as a dumb and deaf man?" This was in the NY Tribune on April 24th 1921, page 6, IMAGE 52, IN CHRONICLINGAMERICA.LOC.GOV, through the library of congress.
The Shuberts were asked to reply. For 90 YEARS we have bought the reason the "Shubert Organization" gave: "Eugene Martinet" was required to do so because every show must be put on by persons of the highest ability! Further, "Eugene Martinet" WAS WOUNED NEAR THE END OF THE WAR while in the infantry at the BATTLE OF "MOUNT FALCON"! Why is this incredulous? I have learned to check everything said by the Shuberts. "Mt. Falcon" is part of a Military and Presidential Medal. Why? At the time of the end of WWI a rich magnet was attempting to construct a "Western Summer White House" and the site was "Mt. Falcon". The only danger there was lightening, which set the place on fire!
For the IBDB, OR IMDB, OR ANY DATABASE, to fail to correct this information is an affront to the President of the United States. Much, much worse, it is the possible concealment of the death of a soldier of WWI, which is an abomination!
If "Eugene Martinet" always was "Joseph Toner", well then The Shubert Organization, MUST say so, publicly and NOW. If they continue the charade, they should be investigated for the stated reasons, by the DOD. They have not admitted that there was a 1945 "Blossom Time" on Broadway. Yet the Shuberts, and only the Shuberts could create a large number, (truly, I mean impressive number of falsified documents!) of shows advertised on the back of the playbill of "Blossom Time" in 1945! It starred "Joseph Toner", and although over the next few years, some of the cast changed, which is demonstrated in the "National Theatre", which the Shubert Organization controls. We have just as many documents of actual touring teams matching the names, sometimes to the most unimportant character put into the "National Theatre" Database, just to keep "Joseph Toner's name out of the "National Theatre".
We can prove that when you see "Blossom Time" ANY Time in the "National Theatre", it will always have "Joseph Toner" in the Cast, except perhaps for 1926. If "Everett Marshall" is singing EITHER "Blossom Time" or "The Student Prince", "Joseph Toner" is in the Cast.
How did Joseph Toner's career get so convoluted?
Joseph Toner and his bride were traveling with Ziegfeld during the 1927 Show Boat. Ziegfeld was turning his opinions around about how he thought of people of color, and other composers. Joseph Toner was using the trip as a late honeymoon. Show Boat opened at the National Theatre, which came up positive for "Joseph Toner". "Joseph Toner" and his wife, Francis, who was already pregnant, spent much time with Mr. Ziegfeld in his private car. Since first writing this review, the Blackmailing of Mr. Toner for having been the original Fred Stone, by publishing a false document of the "new Fred Stone" and his family was able to be documented.
"Joseph Toner, Broadway Legend" was in the 1927 "Show Boat", which we always knew, and let the Shuberts write over and over that he was in Rosalie. He was not in Rosalie. Joseph Toner played in "The Three Musketeers" as "Joseph Macaulay" and in "Show Girl" as "Joseph Macaulay", but with no mention of who he "was".
It is the belief of most people that Howard Marsh starred in Show Boat but that is not what the IBDb says. It does not say Joseph Toner either, but Phil Sheridan! Eventually, Joseph Toner had to be taken out of the show because of his being blackmailed, and history was changed. Joseph Toner did eventually play The Vagabond King, in a revival in 1930, as per the National Theatre, and Friml liked the name Joseph Macaulay, and it stuck. Macaulay is known for this in many operetta books, yet it is not known that it is really Joseph Toner, until this very review!
Ziegfeld's intent was to make "Joseph Toner" his Star. Ziegfeld had an arrangement of some kind to share Joseph Toner with the Shuberts. Ziegfeld knew full well that "Joseph Toner" was a huge operatic prodigy, and had sung full fledged opera in the Metropolitan Opera House. What started as Ziegfeld trying to protect Joseph Toner turned into disaster for his career, as Ziegfeld died in 1932.
Joseph Toner had just finished "Princess Flavia" where he played the male lead "Rupert of Hentzu" which even "Fiorello!" got right! Before the Ziegfeld Follies of 1931, Joseph Toner reprised his role as Detlef, in The Student Prince, then went to Chicago where the revival was failing, and took over the lead, bringing the Chicago revival back to life. We have the photograph of him in full dress as King Karl! The Shuberts know this.
When I first checked if "Joseph Toner" was in "Blossom Time" and "The Student Prince" at the end of 1932 as per the "National Theatre", it came up YES. So did "The Student Prince" dates that say "Joseph Macauley" for "Joseph Toner" in "The Student Prince" and "The Three Musketeers". But I got the materials of both the "raw data" or National Theatre Timeline, and then what they put into the "Mainstage". The Raw Data has a lot more information and imbedded information too. Despite Joseph Toner being listed as the second leading man in the 1931 Student Prince, which many would call Detlef, the IBDB continues to say it is Charles Chesney, The following are all direct quotes from the NYTimes-
1)TITLE "The Student Prince Revival Jan. 29th" Dated Jan 20 1931. --
"As previously announced, the leading roles will be played by Edward Nell Jr. and Elize Gergley, and the company will further include George Hassel (note: Hassel plays Lutz who does not sing) JOSEPH TONER, (emphasis added), Marion Weeks, William Pringle and Marie Stoddard. ....
2)"Theatrical Notes" January 19th 1931, "In addition to Edward Nell Jr. who will have the title role, the case for the Shuberts' forthcoming popular priced revival of "The Student Prince" incude Elize Gergley, George Hassell, JOSEPH TONER, ....."
3)"Governing His Own Career" under "The Openings" THE STUDENT PRINCE-Thursday night at the Majestic Theatre.........In the Cast will be Edward Nell Jr. Elize Gergley, George Hassel, JOSEPH TONER.....
The Playbills talk to the wealthy, and what they have to say is something I am shocked to see. Everyone should have this education, and perhaps we can create a wake up call to remind people of the two class society we were once and are becoming again. And by the Way, Harnick and his partner knew what was going on all the while which is why they got JOSEPH TONER for the failing FIORELLO!
I have heard of the film of the 1929 crash "The Rats on Wall Street" Amazon should market it! It is odd as Theatre was the biggest business in NY and the Shuberts survived just fine.
