The Essential Series has sold more than 18 million units worldwide across 60+ titles!
The first two discs give a good overview of his career spanning 1966 through 2001. And unlike the 2-disc "Greatest Hits 1966-92", this collection manages to include five tracks from his MCA years-all of them Top Ten hits. "Longfellow Serenade" had been a noteworthy omission from the original release but now that's been rectified with the addition of the third disc. In addition, the bonus disc includes two more tracks from his Bang years, some live recordings from 2005 and 2008 and a track from his 2005 album "12 Songs". All in all, this a better, updated version of the original collection truly essential for any die-hard fan or even the casual one.
Mom loved it, was just what she asked for. She remembers when most of these songs came out and she wanted to relive that at 80 y/o. Good gift!
The songs are great, that are not recorded live. Never have been a fan of Neil Diamond's live recordings and there are quite a few on this CD, so that's why the three stars.
After hearing an interview on NPR, it occurred to me that I needed to get som Neil Diamond into my CD collection. This collection has the standards as you will remember them from the radio. I also highly recommend "Hot August Nights".
When you have an artist like Neil Diamond with such a massive legacy it can be hard to know where to start. Whether you are a long time fan or new to Diamond's music this is a wonderfully satisfying compilation of hits and live recordings.
The best thing about this collection for me is realizing you already knew most of the songs and can join in immediately- his music just sort of sneaks up on you like that- an obvious part of your life that you don't always notice but can always find comfort in. This is an exceptional collection by a true master, don't miss it.
Minor notes: This review is for the 3 disc version but there is a 2 disc version available as well, skip it and grab this one, you'll thank later me when you realize you're singing "Boat That I Row" to yourself and smiling like a fool.
