Review - Amazon.com
Taped at the Philips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia on June 28, 2003, Matchbox Twenty's Show depicts a hard-working rock band in its prime and in its element. The full spectacle of Matchbox Twenty's More Than You Think You Are tour comes across, from the band's world-class lights to its lock-tight playing, recorded and mixed for 5.1-channel surround and shot in gloriously film-like high-definition video under the direction of Hamish Hamilton (Madonna, U2, Jennifer Lopez).

As on record, Matchbox Twenty's acute sensitivity to pop dynamics carries the day, showcasing drummer Paul Doucette's propulsive attacks, lead guitarist Kyle Cook's vocals and fretwork, and the soulful belting of lead singer-songwriter Rob Thomas. (The less said of Thomas's occasional piano playing, the better.) The concert itself is free from interview footage and other distractions, and the 45-minute documentary included on disc 2 is candid and focused, revealing the effort required to mount and execute an arena tour.

Dolby Digital 5.1 is the best way to hear the concert, even if you collapse it to stereo, as the Dolby 2.0 tracks are marred by matrixed SRS Circle Surround 5.1 encoding. The presence of the SRS processing is confusing, given the superior Dolby-only sound and the broad household penetration of Dolby-based AV receivers. Alas, there's no DTS surround mix (as advertised in print) or CD-quality PCM stereo mix. --Michael Mikesell

- and I could've been, a ticket holder...

I have been a fan of Matchbox Twenty for a while now, and when I heard they were making a concert video I was excited. However, concert videos can go either way (good or bad) so I was also ready for the worst.

Thankfully though, my doubts were ruled out as minute by minute of the film rolled on. The visuals are spectacular, with editing that fits the paces of the song really well. Personally, I didn't see a problem with the sound, but maybe the volume was up a bit too much.

The video was successful in placing me front and center (and closer) to a great Matchbox Twenty concert. I almost got to go to the concert on the film (Atlanta), so having missed it I am extremely glad that the director did such a fine a job of catching the feel of one of their live concerts.

I'd already decided this worthy of a five-star rating, but on top of the show itself I also enjoyed the documentary, or behind the scenes of the show (which is where most of the explicitness is.) This is located on Disc 2.

In summary, if you're a fan then it's a must like it was for me; however, it is still one of the best representations that people will get of Matchbox Twenty so I'd say it's just a good buy for the music lover/concert watcher in general.

- Unbelievable Performance

This DVD has not been released yet, but I was at the Atlanta concert where it was recorded, and it was one of the most incredible concerts of my life. There was not a time when we sat down. A must have for any M20 fan!

When I first heard that this DVD was coming out, I wanted to add it to my collection. I consider myself a little more than a casual Matchbox Twenty fan, but I've never seen a live concert in person, and this DVD almost compensates. The sound is incredible, I rarely enjoy "live" concert sounds, but they really did a fantastic job at making the sound crisp and clear, no matter what sound system you have, it is great! The video "picture" is great too!

The second disc is kind of neat, you have all the lyrics from the concert displayed in a nifty manner. You can change the camera angles from 6 different views on, "Bright Lights" and "soul", which is kind of neat, you can focus on each member of the band, and watch them in action, instead of watching "just" Rob Thomas, not that, that is bad ::winks:: Oh and the Photo Gallery, which was nothing to write home about, they could of done without that section.

The Documentary was alright, I would of liked them to focus more on each member of the band, and maybe do a biographical kind of thing..they mostly showed and explained how they get ready for a venue, how they prepare, and they showed their tour busses. All in all, I think the DVD is worth your while. It's almost like a "Greatest Hits" package with a ZING! Enjoy!

- Brilliance!

I was completely blown away by the amazing performance and quality of this DVD!

I noticed that there were several responses criticizing the sound so i contacted the production company and they said that a lot of DVD players respond differently to different authoring techniques. BUT if you play it in 5:1 mode adjust the center channel to a louder setting to increase the vocals and decrease the back channel volume to enhance focus of the sound from all the front channels. (if your system doesn't provide seperate volume controls for each channel then you can use the "SRS" in the stero mix).

OR if you just play it in stero/SRS just adjust your DVD menu to the stereo setting, then set your sound system to either DTS 5:1, or Dolby 5:1 or SRS setting ...you will find that you get a full 5:1 Multi Channel Playback. (well you get a true 5:1, not synthesized in anyway)

or just set your sound system to standard stereo as well

it's all worth a try because the DVD is SO worth it! If you consider yourself a true and loyal Matchbox Twenty fan (or even if you've never heard of them - which isn't possible!) then you owe it to yourself to own this one!

They play all their hits, you feel like you're front row, and the documentary which is on the DVD really captures their humor and sincere personalites.

Overall: A+

- Rob Thomas - South Carolina Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!!

Picked the DVD up today, release day, and this is the music DVD all Rob Thomas/Matchbox Twenty fans should have!!! Slightly better than the VH1 DVD, though not as personal ... however, this concert will have your soul imprinted with every word of every song. It is a definitive sing-along DVD, with every song going through the threads of your soul as you join the rowdy crowd in Atlanta. Atlanta knows how to rock out their GA based band!! However, true fans in nearby SC should take appreciation for Rob Thomas and his time in SC and now presence in the South Carolina Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ... the world is now your stage!

The only wish, and deviation from the technical credits, is that this concert is not in DTS. Only DTS concerts have made my Top 5 DVD list --- this DVD being only Dolby Digital 5.1 falls short of making it into my Top 5, cheese and crackers, dang ... if only DTS was blasting my speakers tonight I'd have a different ending to this song. Don't take this critical comment wrong, I'd buy this DVD again before midnight on the release day still knowing DTS was not available!!! But, I'm hoping some other music fans will tell me DTS is out there for this concert!!! Why, why, why ... do I feel stupid? It's a Mad Season.
