- Midnight Love Revisited

Marvin Gaye fans rejoice - this new version of Midnight Love reveals again the man's genius, inspiration and musical virtuousity with a bonus disc, and liner notes by Gaye's biographer and co-writer of Sexual Healing, David Ritz.

Although Midnight Love yielded Marvin's final classic hit - it wasn't his greatest work. The 8-track release has four strong tracks from Midnight Lady to 'Til Tomorrow and then lapses into somewhat filler material, with Marvin's voice knocked into the background by an incessant drum machine and heavily compressed in the last four tracks.

Nonetheless, this bonus disc makes the release more complete with "The Sexual Healing Sessions." Tracks include the Rick James influenced jam "Clique Games" which is the forerunner of Rocking After Midnight; sketch versions of Sexual Healing - which is great to hear in any form, along with other tracks. Notably, Marvin's naked vocals make the songs more apparent and appealing. Some studio banter would have been interesting to hear and maybe the studios will be brave and creative enough to put that out some day.

Like the late Jimi Hendrix, Marvin Gaye is one of the few artists of his ilk that have been reissued with considerable extra material - all of which give small but nice detours into his musical nuances. Essential or not, it's nice to hear stripped down versions of the songs. And in a strange way, they bring the artist to life in a more intimate manner. Collectors may consider adding this to their collection.

- Funky jam rocks...Marvin Gaye classic!

Those of us having the pleasure of enjoying & loving Marvin Gaye's amazing career from the beginning through experiencing stunning classics like "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" or the soulful bliss of "I Heard It Through The Grapevine", losing this legendary icon still hurts but now works like "Midnight Love" seem to bring some healing plus a deeper appreciation of his incredible talent, masterful works such as this musical treasure of a collection grow greater over the years...had no idea as a complete session Marvin Gaye was once again in top form as "Sexual Healing" was the only track radio focused on, making it appear as though "Midnight Love" might be just a "one hit" collection but not the case here! Mega-hit "Grammy Award" winner "Sexual Healing" is a timeless classic coming from a complex time in the life of this true musical genius, working hard for the deserved comeback that should have taken him out of the despair he was suffering, sadly this was not to be as unspeakable tragedy around the corner was a shattering end for this supremely talented soul to come to...

Surprising radio didn't pick up on more tracks to play from this engrossing collection as several with airplay would have been smash hits, giving "Midnight Love" exposure deserved, funk edged quiet storm gem "Rockin' After Midnight" is another hot track that hits it out of the park, with finely woven masterful Marvin vocals that are magical...guess the musically tired eighties wasn't up to something so fine & soulfully mesmerizing. Set opener "Midnight Lady" flows and cooks with a killer rhythm track, sounding like another should have been "Grammy Award" winning classic yet Marvin Gaye was gone in a flash after success of "Sexual Healing", possibly the reason "Midnight Love" didn't receive attention a collection of such quality & artistic importance warranted...all these years later now enjoying the magnificent "Prince Of Soul" in another of his finest musical moments, completely a sublime pleasure! RIP special one, you are loved and missed by many...bonus disc is a magnificent raw jam not to be missed!!!

- great, but really for the hard core fan.

i have several of the 2-disc super expansion deluxe editions of his albums.the original albums on disc 1 are treasures but usually the second discs are outtakes and non-essential things that even hard core fans will rarely play.if you find a really good price,as i did for this, buy it.otherwise,a good single disc remaster will probably be all that you want.
