Kaiser Chiefs were one the great musical success stories of 2005. Fast forward to 2007 and Kaiser Chiefs (Ricky Wilson - lead vocals), Andrew "Whitey" White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Nick "Peanut" Baines (keyboards) and Nick Hodgson (drums and vocals) are about to unveil their much anticipated second album.
Yours Truly, Angry Mob wields its musical might from the start in the shape of "Ruby" - an infectious single to rival anything the band have done before. "Angry Mob", a favorite from the band's European festival appearances last year is destined to be a universal fan favorite. "Heat Dies Down" will surely have 'em pogoing in the aisles en masse, while the stunning "Everything Is Average Nowadays" is perhaps the thread linking Yours Truly... with its predecessor. Yours Truly, Angry Mob, as one band member has been heard to utter, "is an album full of big choruses and even bigger guitars". Maybe so. It's also the work of a band hitting their creative stride. All hail the Chiefs!
Deluxe Version Includes: Hard Back Digipak with 24 page booklet DVD containing 6 live tracks recorded in Berlin last year. 10 minute documentary on the recording of Yours Truly, Angry Mob. Audio CD (same track listing as regular version)
Our favourite rabble rousing lot, Kaiser Chiefs, return with their sophomore disc, "Yours truly, angry mob", which has already topped the UK album charts.
Opening the disc is the uncharacteristic mellow and melodic straight ahead love song "Ruby", the lead off single, which gave them their first UK #1. Following is "The angry mob" whose sing-a-long chorus comes after a tempo shift towards the end of the track.
"Heat dies down" is a catchy, sunny and upbeat song with a terrific guitar riff, sounding not unlike something Franz Ferdinand would do. In a similar vein is the choppy "Learnt my lesson well" with sunny sounding harmonies.
Returning to the Kaiser Chiefs we all know and love, cheeky and rebellious sounding ("Everyday I love you less & less" & "I predict a riot" anyone?) are "Highroyds", "Thank you very much", the buddy song "My kind of guy", the punk feel of "Everything is average nowadays" (the album's second single), the defiant "I can do it without you", the latter displaying their acerbic wit to the full.
Slowing things down, we get the tender acoustic "Love's not a competition (but I'm winning)", the brief piano ballad "Boxing champ", and "Try your best".
Closing is the delightful Smiths-like "Retirement", (I want to get by without the man on my back, they sing) a song we all wish we could sing. Ah!!
Rip-roaring fun!!
My first listen was on an iPod, my second-tenth on an excellent car stereo. Do yourself a favor and pump this album out loud. The production screams for speakers.
i cant even fathom how many great songs are on this CD... "ruby" of course is great "thank you very much" is extremely catchy. i cant get the "angry mob" song out of my head.. and the rest of the songs.. i cant stop listening to. this release is just as good as their 2005 album "employment". i dont think they can do any wrong. and the funny thing is.. no one in the U.S. knows who they are.. and i think thats a crime. too bad its not listed as a capital punishment. :/ these guys are one of my favorite bands and always will be. the lyrics are fun.. the vocals are clear.. and they dont sing about the same garbage over and over again. whats not to like?
I've had this album for over a month now, and it's still my most listened to album today. In fact, I'm jammin to Thank You Very Much as I write this. Yours Truly, Angry Mob is Kaiser Chiefs on top form, and manages to be even tighter than Employment. There is not a single song I skip over when listening to it, and some of the tracks later on in the album have emerged as my favourites, especially Learnt My Lesson Well and Retirement.
What is there to say about the first single Ruby that hasn't already been said? It certainly is pure catchy pop brilliance, without being in any way annoying. Excellent.
I'm not an expert on special edition bonus DVDs, but I can say the section Tim's Short Film had me in absolute stitches, and the live videos had me jumping.
Bottom line: If you're a fan of unpretentious guitar pop/rock, this will not disappoint.
I love alternative music. Unfortunately, I have not liked alot of what I have heard lately. That was until I heard the song Ruby on the radio. I was blown away by the lyrics and the great sound of this band. I have been buying alot of classic rock lately. This is the first current alternative cd I have bought in long time. I was a little concerned because people had said that Ruby was the only good song on the album. In my opinion, the rest of the album is just as good as Ruby. I can't stop listening to it. Five stars all the way!
