This boxed set is special because it is the ONLY way to own and hear ALL the tracks from Johnny Horton's greatest and BEST selling LP: "Johnny Horton Makes History" As a farm boy growing up in the 50's, my brother and I learned and memorized EVERY song from this GREAT LP. We then were required by our elementary school teachers to sing these special songs on demand for ANY class in our rural K-12 school. And sing them we did. These Johhny Horton songs remain an IMPORTANT and LASTING link to my childhood and along with the American Civil War Centenial of 1961 kindeled a life-long love of history. I am now a High School History teacher and still use these songs to entertain and TEACH my students.

I've been a diehard Johnny Horton fan my entire life, which always made my taste in music kind of odd to my friends, since I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I distinctly recall the very first time I ever heard of Johnny Horton; I overheard my mother singing "The Battle Of New Orleans' as a kid back in 1975, and I've been hooked ever since! These powerful collections put out by the Bear Family provided me with songs and history on Johnny that I had been searching for all of my life. I could have researched him forever, but without these box sets, my efforts would have been in vain. Johnny Horton 1956-1960 will provide you with wonderful listening and the enclosed booklet, with biography and pictures, will truly bring Johnny back to life!

This is an excellent rare collection of Johnny Horton's music!
It contains nearly all of the songs that Johnny recorded or that
anyone would care to listen to. All of his hits and many of his
non-hits (though still interesting songs: i.e., "Miss Marcy")
are here. Alternate versions of his hits, such as "Sink the
Bismarck" and "The Battle of New Orleans," are also on this
collection. Additionally, the 124 page biographical booklet,
filled with photographs both famous and rare, humanizes the
artist in a way that no conventional collection of his greatest
hits ever could. A word to the wise: order this collection
used if you can. Not only can you get a reduced price, but you
may have trouble ordering it any other way. Whatever price
you pay, this collection is well worth the expense!!!
I've been listening to these great songs ever since I was a kid and my dad bought me the "Sink the Bismarck" on 45RPM. I saw this about 15 yrs ago at a spot for imports and had to have it. My dad and I split the cost and never looked back. I reminds me of much easier living!
Buy it if you like any of these songs, you'll love them all.
Did you know Johnny Horton recorded the best rockabilly recording?
Listen to "Cherokee boogie"
Also his voice was good at ballads"Whispering pines"
He also wrote and sang cowboy songs, listen to "The streets of dodge".
You can almost feel the breeze of Dodge city when you listen to it.This is Johnny Horton at his best, what a voice he had.
Extreme good sound on all these recordings as always from Bear Family Records. It is worth the money, buy it and enjoy it!
