Armatrading is an underrated UK singer/songwriter who emerged in the mid 1970s with great folk albums containing hits like Down To Zero and Love And Affection. Her introspective lyrics and acoustic style changed later when she made it big with catchy but intelligent pop songs like Drop The Pilot, Me Myself I and All The Way From America. The tracks are not arranged chronologically which makes for a nice mix of electric and acoustic sounds and provides the opportunity for a renewed appreciation of her lyrical and musical genius. Her songs about relationships are particularly poignant. All of these songs are special but my other favourites includes (I Love It When You) Call Me Names, Rosie and All The Way From America but it's a pity that great album tracks like Water With The Wine have been excluded. Fans of artists like Suzanne Vega, Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Tracy Chapman and Tanita Tikaram will love the work of Joan Armatrading.
