This package of five classic Jeff Beck Albums is a great way to get an overview of this artist's phenominal history. The price is more than fair and the product can't be beat. The sound quality is wonderful on these legacy recordings. There are some who are put off by the mini album sleeve packaging and the lack of extended liner notes. But if thats what you want then buy the individual CD's . This package however gives you all the great music at a great price and that's what really matters to me anyway. I highly recomend these cd's as well as the others in this series.
A collection of Jeff Beck's seminal albums (two with the second edition of The Jeff Beck Group, two "solo" albums and one with the Jan Hammer Group backing him up)this set is a pretty good way to collect these albums inexpensively.
As near as I can tell these feature the original masterings on CD for these albums (or if they are new masterings they are darn close)and I picked this up to obtain the "Rough and Ready" album to replace the Japanese edition that I had before and figured I could give away the other albums (since I had them in other editions).
Drawbacks: There are no liner notes for any of these albums and while the miniature sleeves are pretty decent representations of the vinyl versions, they should have plastic inner sleeves to protect these from scratches. The website that had the credits is no longer active (or has the credits listed)and Sony needs to update this or, at the very least, remove the website info on the packaging. It's been less than two years for some of these titles so really there's no excuse. It's just sloppy.
Positives: The cardboard case that houses all of these is extremely sturdy and well made. The masterings sounds anywhere from good to exceptional depending on the source that was used for the original mastering.
"Rough and Ready", "The Jeff Beck Group" (aka the "orange" album), "Wired" and "Blow by Blow" are all essential albums.
"Rough and Ready" is an acquired taste for some fans due to Bob Tench's voice but the playing is stellar throughout. Some of the songs are a bit weak and Beck could have benefited from a collaborator of the caliber of Rod Stewart or Ron Wood (Max Middleton is a worthy one here but, again, Tench's singing and tone is an acquired taste).
"Jeff Beck Group" features the same line up as the previous album and, like "Rough and Ready" it has held up quite well over all. Many have criticized the production of Steve Cropper for this album but it works well for the most part.
"Wired" and "Blow by Blow" both feature sympathetic production by George Martin and one of the best members of the previous line up of the Jeff Beck Group keyboardist Max Middleton (who has also collaborated with, among others, Chris Rea)contributing often writing material with Beck.
None of these when reissued on CD (and remastered) have featured bonus tracks.
"Jeff Beck with The Jan Hammer Group" is the weakest of the bunch not because of the playing by Beck (which is stellar) but because of the poor vocals by Hammer and Tony Smith. The playing isn't the most sympathetic to Beck's playing in my opinion but there will be those that are attached to the recording for one reason or another).
This is a nice set worth picking up for fans of Beck and it's inexpensive. If you're looking for the ultimate edition in terms of mastering, you'll probably have to pick these up indivudally (and pay a lot more) but for getting these albums on a budget, this is a worthwhile set.
Both the product screenshot and the back of box show a track 10 (You Know What I Mean) and track 11 (She's a Woman) on Blow By Blow. Neither my computer, or my Oppo-BDP80, or my car CD player see these tracks. I'm gathering they don't exist.
Still great price for what you get.
Excellent, thanks a lot! I really enjoy buy it!

I had a couple of Jeff Beck CD's and I liked a few songs on them so I thought I'd try this set to get a better perspective on Jeff Beck. I think he's a great guitar player but guess his style just isn't for me. Most of it seems like it's some sort of Jazz inspired. I tend to like something with an easy to follow beat or rhythm and for most of the music on these CD's I'm just a bit lost. Sorry for the bad review. I'm not one of those that thinks he can't play as well as other I just can't understand his style.
