- Leaper does Sibelius right

Not perhaps spectacular, but this recording of the 2nd avoids most of the errors in it that happen with the typical budget recordings. In comparison to other Naxos sets, all of them, 1-7, are fine. If I recall, the 4th has tubular bells, not glockenspiel.

If you finds a box set of the symphonies, get it by all means. The more recent Naxos sets by Inkinen and by Sakari are not better, though recording technology has improved a bit.

I definitely like the 2nd here, about half of the recordings of the 2nd are not this good.

- a good introduction to sibelius

this is a nice juxtaposition of the 2nd (composed in 1902) and 7th (his last in 1924). while i'm unfamiliar with the composer, this performance has lots of brisk energy to it, and is quite accessible.

naxos liner notes are excellent, giving both historical and interpretive information is a terse and thoughtful form.
