- A classic reading that isn't overly individualistic, despite its fame

Reviewers cite this reading of the Sibelius Violin Concerto with Ida Haendel as the best. It's tough to find and expensive, but it's still wooing fans. I can understand why. Along with the noted Sibelian Paavo Berglund, Haendel creates an environment full of authority. We're in company with Finnish musicians, after all. Haendel has impressive credentials, most notably in the lavishing praise she received from the composer himself.

When it comes down to the actual interpretation, there's nothing particularly radical about it. While Viktoria Mullova took the broad opening movement as a chance to immerse us in cold, dark intensity, Haendel takes a more moderate view. I'm surprised these Finnish interpreters don't convey more of the essence of Finland's chilly forests. One can praise their control and calm assurance, but I was expecting more individuality. Another violinist, Gil Shaham, keeps us moving with propulsive urgency coupled with warm lyricism. Greatness in this concerto can't be put in a box, as I love both Mullova and Shaham in the concerto, different as they are.

The problem with the disc in question is that it's tough to pick out a strain of personality as defining as the other two mentioned. And I've hardly listened to all the recordings out there. Perhaps this reading was exceptional in its day only to be surpassed by newer accounts? Many interpreters seem unable to master Sibelius' music, giving way to boredom or becoming restless, missing the fundamental strain of resignation. This reading passes that test, but it doesn't go beyond it. It could use more involvement.

But for those who want their Sibelius done with a relaxed, dignified air, this reading is probably unbeatable, hence its following. I can't condemn its enthused fans, but find more meaning in the aforementioned readings.

(I'm not familiar with the Serenades, but they receive a similar interpretation. Perhaps this interpretation calls for more attention since there's less competition.)

- Wonderful

Among other hats I wear, I do music therapy and have found the Sibelius Violin Concerto extremely useful for exploring areas of the psyche that are shielded from awareness. Before buying this on amazon.com, I read quite a bit on Celibidache and Ida Haendel and watched several videos of both and then read some more on Sibelius, only to discover that he was not happy with the interpretation of the concerto until hearing Ms. Haendel on the radio. So, while this recording does not feature her favorite conductor, the playing is beyond exquisite. Compared to other performances, I would describe this as much more musical, less strident, and more fluid. It offers a totally new listening experience and is simply superb.

- Best interpretation of the Sibelius!

Haendel is definitely my favorite interpreter of the Sibelius Violin Concerto (which even the composer himself praised) - I've listened to some other ones (Szeryng, Heifetz, Oistrakh, Ferras), but tend to gravitate back to her when it comes to Sibelius. I own 3 recordings of this VC by Haendel; this one, one with Simon Rattle/City Of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, as well as one with Karl Ancerl/Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. This one comes out first for me. Highly recommended! My favorite interpretation of my favorite violin concerto!

- Super rendition!

A superb rendition by the "queen of the violin"- all the heartfelt passion and intrigue demanded by the Sibelius violin concerto is present here! The Seranades and Humoresque are equally compelling! Enjoy this classic!

- Emblematic Sibelius!

Ida Haendel signed her name among the reduced elite of supreme virtuosi with her elusive and atmospheric approach. She gives the Concerto a subtle nuance and charming lyricism without losing expressive power.

On the other hand, you'll find two premiere recordings: The Violin Serenades Op 69 1 and 2.

Paavo Berglund is in plain shape as supporting conductor. A very rewarding album all the way through. Don't miss it!!!
