Review - Amazon.com
Thank God someone thought to record the Godfather in concert at this vital stage of his career--and at the ultimate shrine of black American music, to boot. There is no more exciting document of live performance in the history of R&B: powered by tireless drummer Clayton Fillyau, James Brown and the Famous Flames tear their way through a slew of King hits--from "Please, Please, Please" to "Night Train"--taking soul power to the very edge of gospel abandon in the process. The Apollo audience, hysterical with adulation, plays as big a part in Live at the Apollo as Brown himself. The shrieking buildup and sudden drop down into "Lost Someone" is one of the most heart-stopping moments in soul. --Barney Hoskyns

- One of the best I own

You can see him, screeching out Kansas City or collapsing during the final strains of Please, Please, Please. Back then, he was the show...not the video screens and explosions and crap you see today. This may be the best live album ever.

- Oh Brother

Wow. Some say this album is the greatest live album ever recorded, and I find it hard to argue. All you people sitting at home, bored, watching tv, should listen to this show now and understand the meaning of the word SOUL. The brother had soul, more than anyone else, ever, and he let it all out that night in 1962. Get up and dance -- listen to this show and you won't be able to resist. Amazing.

- The King of them all

Who is the zombie who gave this a 1 star rating? If you can't get into this, check your pulse, you may be dead. JB moves and grooves, emotes, promotes, and kicks ass like the "soul" wannabees now can only dream about. Not enough stars in the milky way to rate this essential recording. I've bought it on vinyl, cd, mp3 download, and bootleg minidisc. It never fails to pick me up when I'm down.

- Not the 1962 version

The introduction (track 1) refers to "Don't be a Dropout" as "the most constructive record of 1966." Clearly, this "At the Apollo" collection is not the 1962 version.

- Ladies and Gentlemen... JAMES BROWN!! JAMES BROWN!!

Live at the Apollo Theater is THE quintessential guide to soul. James's gift is at its strongest and all the moons and planets aligned to create an unrepeatable event. It's a man's world! prisoner of love!! Please Please Please.. Why go on. If it's his greatest, James included it in this give-it-ALL-up masterpiece for all men, for all musicians, for all time... You WILL dance... Raw unrestrained SOUL! Enjoy.
