Review - Product Description
Already having had a #1 in the US Billboard Charts, with both her debut album and single, Hilary Duff is one of the States biggest and brightest stars. Best known as "Lizzie McGuire", Duff has enjoyed tremendous success, spawning a multi-million dollar grossing movie, two soundtracks (one for the TV show and one for the movie with sales in excess of 2 million), she even has her own magazine in the UK entitled "Lizzie McGuire" all at 15.
Review - Amazon.com
She may have played a teenaged girl mistaken for a pop star in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, but after releasing a Christmas album in 2002, and crooning two songs on the movie’s soundtrack, Hilary Duff looks like she means business. The only trouble is, she doesn’t sound like it. Although dubbing her first album Metamorphosis, the disc is anything but. Her singing is as coy and kittenish as her on-screen persona and she mugs her way through most of the 13 songs with charm and aplomb, but little natural singing talent. But to her credit, the actress has managed to cover a multitude of vocal sins by hiring a team of crack producers, who double her voice whenever possible, giving many of the tracks the rather anthemic feel of a cheerleading squad. The best songs on the disc are the three masterminded by the Matrix, the same production team that oversaw Avril Lavigne's hit disc and they give the lissome actress’s singing some attitude and grit, like on the infectious and spectacularly bratty "So Yesterday," and the cleverly conceived "Math," complete with heavy metal guitar riffs. But Duff is not inhabiting that saucy jailbait territory staked by Britney Spears. At the ripe old age sixteen, she’s much more Barbies than bustiers. --Jaan Uhelszki

- A review from a pop fan

Ok, I went through quite a bit of the reviews to figure out whether I should get the CD or not... and of course it was kind of useless because all there was, was too many people going "I LOVE HILARY, she's the best" and too many people going "I HATE HILARY, SHE SUCKS!" and I was like... ok..... like those are gonna help my decision. Truly, I don't think people should review unless they are into the type of music the artist is considered because mostly on a country album there'll be rap fans reviewing "THIS SUCKS" when they most likely dont have the album, and in this case, 23+ year old girls saying its just teeny bubblegum pop. OMG!!!!! What the heck do they expect. The Facts: Hilary Duff is 15, She is a teenage girl with a life, she is a beginning singer and yet there are people comparing her to Mariah Carey and Whiteney Houston???!?!?! First off, if you're into adult contemporary.. you shouldnt even be tempted to listen to this, and face the facts.. teen pop is in and teens would not give a f*$# what you think.

Now I am a pop fan so this will be a true review. Well, unlike the past pop-princesses, Hilary is not sexual at all and keeps things on a G-rated basis which is actually kind of good. The songs are catchy ad the ballads are soft, her voice is pretty alright.. much different from Britney and Christina. The catchy songs are really great to dance to and move your head to... its great! Songs like "So Yesterday, Come Clean, Party Up, Sweet 16 and Why Not" just get you straight into a good mood while "Love Just Is, Anywhere But Here, Love Just Is, Inner Voice" are nice to lay back and enjoy the ballads. Overall.... IF YOU LIKE POP!!!!! this is a great addition to your CD collection...and if you dont.... why the heck are you spending your time here?

- The Worst....

My sister has this CD and she has been playing it non-stop and it has to be one of the most god-awful things I have ever heard. Hilary Duff doesn't sing, she whines and whines and whines some more. This CD is what the bagpipes of hell sound like. This is the worst, period.

- Newest Britney Rival?? Not Quite There Yet

Hilary Duff, a sixteen-year-old Disney actress, is mostly famous for her role as Lizzie McGuire in the Disney program of the same name. However, she seems to be one of the few teen pop singers that people think has the potential to have as much or more success than Britney Spears. Like many actresses (J Lo and Jennifer Love Hewitt come to mind), Hilary decided to pursue a singing career and released two albums to date. The first one, "Santa Claus Lane" was a Christmas album containing mostly old holiday favourites sung in virtually that same manner as the originals. Almost a year later, Hilary returned with her non-holiday debut "Metamorphosis", which most fans of Lizzie McGuire picked up upon release.

The album starts off with the single "So Yesterday", a syrupy song that had a lot of exposure on the Disney channel and some success on other music channels. The song is lyrically quite weak, which is almost expected of young pop singers, however there is no reason why lyrics couldn't be stronger than "if the light it off then it isn't on". The song alternates from being oddly appealing to extremely annoying and only the bridge is consistently enjoyable. Afterwards comes another single, and by far the album highlight, "Come Clean". The song has a somewhat haunting quality about it and is lyrically the strongest track. The lyrics are actual somewhat deeper than you'd expect from Hilary and draw attention away from the fact that Hilary is far from a strong vocalist. The next track, "Workin' It Out" seems like it's supposed to be inspirational but it falls flat. Mostly, the song suffers from an incredibly weak chorus which is repeated at least four times. Also, Hilary sounds more like she's half-speaking, half-singing instead of actually singing the song.

The next song, "Little Voice" seems to be a favourite of fans but I find it absolutely irritating. Hilary's vocals (if you can call them vocals, again she's half-speaking the lyrics) are incredibly annoying (just listen to the way they are sung/spoken). Lyrically, this song is also exceptionally weak ("you smell so sweet just like my perfume"). As well, there is a chant of "la,la,la," etc., which seems to be put in solely to make the song longer. The song after, "Where Did I Go Right?" gives the listener a glimmer of hope that the album is going to improve. The lyrics are somewhat deeper but not nearly up to the level of "Come Clean" and Hilary's voice actually sounds great in this song. The bridge once again is particularly strong. Just when things start to look up however, we come to "Anywhere But Here" which tries to be deep but fails miserably and ends up not making much sense ("I'm falling through the door, flying cross the floor"). Hilary sounds particularly young in this song, which is really not a good thing.

"The Math", which is up next, also seems to be a favourite of fans and many people seem to disregard the fact that the song has nothing to do with the actual subject of math. The song seems to be an attempt to do an Avril-esque (note that I am not saying Hilary is trying to be Avril) rock song which does not work in the slightest because of the abysmal lyrics. ("Is it a minus or a plus, does enough equal enough"). Next up is the equally dreadful "Love Just Is", which, like many of the other songs on the album, suffers from poor lyrics and weak vocals. The verses seem to be decent lyrically however the chorus is incredibly poorly written. ("Love just is whatever it may be, love just is you and me"). After that comes "Sweet Sixteen" which is far too repetitive, not only in the chorus but also in the verses, for my taste. Upon reading the lyrics, I have no idea what the song has to do with being sixteen. The lyrics are once again subpar (though that's a bit of an understatement) with lines like "my blonde hair is everywhere" and "drivin' down to the club where we go to dance".

Next comes another upbeat attempt at a pop-rock song (at least that's what it seems like) however, like a majority of the songs on the album, "Party Up" suffers from poor lyrics that are simply confusing in places. ("This could be the start of something, why don't you party up?"). Also, there is something vaguely familiar about the music in this song. Afterwards comes "Metamorphosis" which is equally confusing because it seems like a metaphor gone wrong, as there are mentions of butterflies and cocoons that don't fit in with the rest of the song. As well, the chorus doesn't seem to have anything to do with the rest of the song. ("Metamorphosis, whatever this is..."). Lastly, there is a spoken verse at the end, which appears to be listing any word that rhymes with "transformation". Next up is the short song, "Inner Strength" which seems more like a work-in-progress than a real song. It is far too short to be a song but is a nice, inspirational touch. Lastly, there is the first single "Why Not" which I cannot stand however everyone seems to love it. The lyrics are too trite and the vocals too irritating for my taste.

Overall Mark: 2/5

Hilary has a long way to go before she can possibly rival the popularity of Britney Spears. Granted Hilary has a large fanbase because of her role as Lizzie McGuire but her lyrics are weak, even for an album of pure pop, and her vocals are even weaker. It is fairly obvious that there are computerized or at least layered in many places. However, you've got to give Hilary credit for making an entirely clean, kid-friendly pop album though she could do with much better songs. I would take "Come Clean", "Where Did I Go Right" and maybe "So Yesterday" and call it a day.

- ......

You know, the only reason why this wench is so famous is because her mother is a producer and her father blackmailed countless movie directors that if they wanted to shoot their scenes on the Duff family ranch, they had to put Hilary and her sister in the movie. Don't believe me? Read about it in this month's Seventeen issue. She even says "blackmail" herself. She is living proof that you can be whatever you want in life...if you have the money to bribe powerful people. If you acutally sit down and listen to this CD (believe me, I have) you'll realize that it's all just computerized crap. It isn't even Hilary's real voice! My brother has seen her in concert and says that she sucks. I wish that there were more smart people in this world, who didn't blindly love whatever the media puts out as being new and in style. If there was, we might actually have had REAL music today. Hilary has no talent at all and dosen't deserve anything she has. You can tell that's she absolutely fake and her cute, sweet, happy sunshine nature is all just for show. And to all her mindless fans reading this and wanting to rip my head off: come on, hit the "no" button down there. Knock yourself out.

- A review... and then some

Okay, first off, you people who keep giving her 1-star and 5-star reviews just to make the average higher/lower should stop right now. It gives people the wrong opinion of the CD.

Anyway, let me talk about Hilary Duff as a singer. She is just not singing material, the lyrics suck (which is not her fault as she doesn't write her own lyrics), and the songs are just plain annoying. I can't see any redeeming qualities to this CD unless you like to play frisbee frequently. In that case, just buy one for $2. Simple.

Let's just go into one of the things people use to defend her, shall we?

"She's only 16!" That is used so frequently that you should just dismiss it. Since there are other singers that are/were her age when they started their musical career that this excuse holds no water. Let me list some that started at her age, but are better: Joss Stone, Stevie Wonder, Charlotte Church, Michael Jackson, Frankie Lymon, and Axl Rose (who was 17 when he recorded Live Like a Suicide).

What is even worse, besides the fact that she didn't write her lyrics (which is sad in it's own right since Robert Smith of The Cure started writing his songs when he was 15), is that she didn't even work to get her record deal. She got it because her show was the most popular show on Disney. You think that this girl could really get a record deal on her own. Hell no!

Okay, now let's look at the lyrics written by professionals (who are older). "Why not take a crazy chance? Why not do a crazy dance?" I know that it's a song that says that you should take risks or life could pass you by, but the line "why not do a crazy dance" is just not relevent and is probably just there to make the song longer.

Now look at something Alice Cooper wrote for his song Brutal Planet.

We're only human, we were born to die

Why don't you, come down to

"This world is such perfection" (What a sight)

It's such a brutal planet

We took advice from that deceiving snake

Why don't you, come down to

"This world is such perfection" (What a sight)

Here's where we keep the armies

Why don't you, come down to

"This world is such perfection" (What a sight)

Right here we stoned the prophets

Now compare the two. You will know the difference immediately.

Looks like the music industry is going downhill. And it looks like Hilary is a part of it.

WHERE HAS ALL THE GOOD MUSIC GONE!!!
