With the release of their fourth major label album "Warning" Green Day shows once again that they aren't your average "punk-rock" band. Gone are the three power chord angst filled songs, but the catchy harmonies that made "Dookie" a commercial success are back. However, this is "Warning" and not "Dookie." The title track in itself asks "Is the cop or am I the one that's really dangerous?" That's pure Green Day...defiance, questioning everything and so on. "Blood, Sex, And Booze" is a good track that has a catchy beat and you just can't help but to tap your toes to. "Church on Sunday" explores the new direction of Green Day, asking the question "If I promise to go to church on Sunday, will you go with me on Friday night? If you live with me I'll die for you and this compromise." "Fashion Victim" explores the pop culture of brand name clothes, asking "what's in the name?" "Castaway" is one of the best tracks on the album, telling the story of a loner trying to find his way. Then, the album gets incredible.."Misery" is a Russian-Spanish style song with acordians used very nicely, and with Bille Joe's vocals telling different stories of troubled people. "Deadbeat Holiday" is a decent song, with a message that attacks all losers who do nothing about themselves. "Hold On" is a song written by BJ for a friend who had three loved ones die in the same year. He says "When there's nothing left to hold on to, you gotta hold on to yourself." "Jackass" is a song about just that...idiots. The main line says "Everybody loves a joke, but no one likes a fool." How true. "Waiting" is another of the breakthrough, non angst songs that inspires hope in the listener. "I've been waiting a lifetime for this moment to come, I'm destined for anything at all." If you're reading this, then odds are you've already heard "Minority" the song that wants to be the underprivilaged and have their attitudes toward authority (for the most part). And finally, perhaps the greatest song on the album, "Macy Day Parade" is a wonderful ballad, similar to "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" but in a whole other direction. This beautiful song conveys the message that "I'm thinking about a brand new hope, the one I've never known, 'cause now I know it's all that I've wanted." Overall, this album is a pure gem, although it will be marred by critics because it isn't "Dookie" and the standards have been set so high. But who cares? They are happy, and the album is wonderful. I recommend this to the die-hard Green Day fan, and to those who have never liked them as well. The guys should be proud of this effort!
First off I'm SICK of hearing Greenday "fans" scream 'sell-out' b/c ONE album isnt exactly what they like. Any true GD fan should be ashamed of criticizing a group that stayed true to themselves, even if they (GD) themselves changed.
I am like most ppl in saying their first CDs were awesome, even Insomniac. WARNING is a terrific album both lyrically and musically, and is easily the most listenable of any Greenday CD. Anyone who says the 3-chord power songs didnt get at least a TINY bit old is lying. That's why Nimrod was such a success, b/c they made it more interesting, just as they have here.
BS&B, Castaway, Jackass and Minority are all awesome songs, and good old GD. COS is good also as is Deadbeat Holiday and MDP. Waiting and the title track are both weak and annoying, and overall just garbage songs. The rest is nothing fantastic, but it's good solid music nonetheless. And GD still has the funny lyrics and good baselines that we love.
I think we can all agree that the main reason why we love or loved Greenday is because they were original and because they were real. COS, MDP and even Hold On are relative to BJ's life, and are REAL. I think Fashion Victim might've been a token song for us, but the rest IS Greenday, pure and true. Billie Joe once again, like in the beginning of his career, went against the crowd and came out w/ HIS music. He knew he'd ruffle some feathers w/ Warning, just as he did w/ Dookie and the Lookout! Records CDs, but he stayed true to himself. This isnt a group trying to be something it's not , and for that, I applaud them. Buy and enjoy this CD because it's terrific music, not because you're a punk-junkie living in the past.
I am a huge Green Day fan and when I heard they had a new CD coming out I couldn't wait. I stared reading about it, and found that 'Warning' was suposed to be a slower album. After three years of waiting I was ready for something really rockin' But I still bought it even if it was just for the wicked first single 'Minority.' Right, it wasn't the usual Green Day, but it's awsome. All of the songs are great:
Warning: All of the lyrics are suposivly from bumper stickers -7/10
Blood, Sex and Booze: Great guitar work, and one of the best on the CD - 10/10
Church On Sunday: Great lyrics and sound - 10/10
Fashion Victim: Another good rock song with great guitar work - 9/10
Castaway: One of the plainer tracks with some punk added - 7/10
Misery: Very weird. It sticks out from the rest and not your usual Green Day - 8/10
Deadbeat Holiday: Just a good song reminds me of 'Burnout' just a tad - 9/10
Hold On: A good deep song with acoustic added - 10/10 Jackass - Awsome punk rock! One of the best tracks - 10/10
Waiting - A slower deeper track,but with a lot of guitars - 9/10
Minority - Everyone's favorite. The best song on the CD! 10/10
Macy's Day Parade - A slow acoustic song that you can't help but like - 10/10
A must have!
Before I begin the review, I'd like to say one thing: Whoever keeps posting the "GREENDAYSUCKS" reviews has no taste in music. All they're doing is copying the same thing and posting it on the reviews of Green Day's CD's, even though they've probably never heard any of their music before.
And, for what it's worth...
"1. They are the worst case of sellouts"
Sellouts? SELLOUTS! One of the best things about Green Day is, despite how popular they've become (It's not their fault that people like their music) they've kept there integrity. They stay true to their punk roots while experimenting with new types of music. And, as I remember, people were calling them sellouts 12 years ago when they came out with Dookie- please, make up your mind, people! Green Day has more fans than haters, and the haters, don't even appreciate their music. Is it such a crime to experiment with new types of music? The guys in Green Day have been playing for over 20 years now, they have to expand and branch out to different genres in order to keep people interested and add some variety to their sound. Besides, does the fact that they're on MTV once in a while make their music any better/worse?
"2. They have barely any musical talent"
I'm sorry, but I completely disagree with this statement- Green Day is one of the most talented bands ever; just as good as the Ramones, The Clash, and all of those legendary bands. Billie Joe Armstrong has an amazing voice (especially compared to some of those other bands' lead singers out there today, i.e.: Good Charlotte, Simple Plan, etc.) He's also a songwriting genius and amazing at guitar. Mike Dirnt is one of the most talented bassists in the world- if you listen closey to some of their songs, you can hear how intricate and catchy the basslines are. And I can't forget Tre Cool- the most amazing drummer I've ever heard, even better than Travis Barker from Blink-182.
"3. Their songs all sound alike"
Uh, I beg to differ! Sure, a lot of the songs on Insomniac or 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy hours seem a little similar...but none of them sound exactly alike! One of the great things about Green Day is they play a wide variety of music, from the catchy, classic-punk "Welcome to Paradise", to the compelling songs on American Idiot, to the hardrock, catchy "Hitchin' A Ride" and "Nice Guys Finish Last", to soft acoustic songs ("Good Riddance", "Warning"), unique, eclectic songs like "Brain Stew" and "Geek Stink Breath", and a few experimental songs like "King For A Day", the snarling "Take Back", and more...the list goes on and on.
"4. They tried to become new-generation rock "
Green Day aren't "trying" to be anything- they've never really followed the trend. The only reason that some of their new songs have sounded a little similar to those of new bands is because they inspire people! I've read many, many magazine articles about new bands, and groups like Simple Plan, Fall Out Boy, and Blink-182 have said that Green Day's music has influenced them. While rap/hip hop was extremely popular and emo was the new thing, Green Day completely went against the grain and produced a rock opera!
"5. Anyone associated with them is a poser
6. They are posers and have made more kids into posers
7. After claiming hardrock they make terrible poser songs"
If I had a dollar for every time somebody has called a great rock group like Green Day, or even a legendary band like The Sex Pistols "posers", I'd have more money than Britney Spears, Mary-Kate and Ashley, Oprah, and Bill Gates combined. First of all, they don't claim "hard-rock"; they don't really fit into any sort of genre because they play a wide variety of music! They're not overconfident at all; they just like what they do. Who cares if a band is full of "posers" or not? If you like their music, you like it. You don't have to put a label on it.
"8. Not one song they made has ever been good"
I'm not even going to bother with that one...
"9. Thanks to them, all i can hear on radios is Holiday, the worst song of all time
10. I have to listen to people hum their retarded poser punk music in class"
This just goes to show that whoever "GREENDAYSUCKS" is doesn't know any of their music besides the stuff they hear on the radio! (Although Holiday is a good song). Hey, it's not their fault that they're so good that a lot of people like them.
"Now coems the best part....the poser wanna be rocker clicks no and tries to stay tough.......try listening to Zeppelin, if you arent too busy with the new-wave crappy excuse for music"
Ughh...this is the part that bugs me the most. After completely trashing Green Day like that, this person has the audacity to say that Led Zeppelin is "real" music and Green Day isn't? Just because Led Zeppelin have been around for a while doesn't mean they're that great. Personally, I think they're nothing more than screeching hippies in tight pants that completely forget about the melody of the song and go overboard on the guitar solo. And please, try to spell "comes" right next time you right a review.
Well, now that I'm done complaining, here's the actual review.
I had heard from many people that this was Green Day's worst album, so I held off on it for a while. I had all of their other albums, including 1039 and Kerplunk, so one day I decided I was in need of I decided I was in need of another Green Day CD and I bought this one. I expected that it would be
so-so, but I put it in my CD player when I got home and I absolutely loved it! It's a brilliant album. Sure, some of the tracks are a little poppy, but it's just as punk as their other albums, and really presents a turning point for the band.
1. Warning: An interesting way for Green Day to start an album. I wouldn't say it's a slow song, but it's pretty much all acoustic. I love the lyrics, though- it satires paranoid people and sayings such as "Don't take candy from strangers" or "keep out of reach of children."
8.5/10
2. Blood, Sex, and Booze: This is one of my favorite songs on Warning. It's all electric guitar, and I love the way Billie Joe's voice sounds on it. There are a few key changes in it, which adds to the greatness of the song. Billie even uses some nice voice tricks in the end. Green Day really takes some risks with this song and its content. 10+/10
3. Church on Sunday: Personally, I'm not a big fan of this song...it's a bit poppy for my taste. Other people might like it though. In fact, it's even started to grow on me. It's basically about Billie Joe making
compromises for his wife, Adrienne ("if I promise to go to church on Sunday/Will you go with me on Friday night"...) 8/10
4. Fashion Victim: I LOVE THIS SONG! Fashion Victim showcases how great Green Day is at writing songs! It almost pokes fun at people who get caught up in fashion trends. ("Living well and dressed to kill/but she looks like hell to me"...). I love the way Billie says "So when you're dancing through your wardrobe/do the anorex-a-go-go". The backup vocals
on Mike's part are also very good. 10/10
5. Castaway: I have to admit, I didn't like this song at first, but it's one of my favorites now. I wouldn't call it pop, but it's upbeat and fun to listen to. It has that "Green Day feel" to it, but there's something else about it, too... I love the
bass solo near the end. 9/10
6. Misery: I hated this song at first, mostly because it was different, but now I absolutely love it. It sort of sounds like a combination of Aladdin and the beginnings of American Idiot. Misery is basically about a bunch of people who have catastrophic things happen to them, then elope/die, etc. Tre, Mike, and Billie Joe must have had fun writing this one. 10+/10
7. Deadbeat Holiday: I'm not really sure exactly what this song's about, but I still like it. The lyrics are interesting- the song starts off with "Wake up, the house is on fire/and the cat is caught in the dryer" (a reference to Billie Joe's cat Zero, who died in the washing machine when he was a kid. Ouch.) 9/10
8. Hold On: Kind of an upbeat song that starts off with harmonica and hen transitions into catchy vocals. In a way I guess it's an anti-suicide song...in my opinion, it's a a lot better than Good Charlotte's "Hold On". 8/10
9. Jackass: A song about a person who thinks they're funny and always feel the need to be the center of attention. I love the lyrics...you can almost picture someone like that, very well written. And I love when Billie yells "alright!" and the song breaks into a saxophone solo.
8.5/10
10. Waiting: Good song, but by no means my favorite. It doesn't have that Green Day edge to it, and it's a bit poppy, but it goes to show that the band can play a wide variety of music. 7.8/10
11. Minority: From the minute I heard this on International Superhits, my first Green Day CD, I absolutely loved it. The vocals, the bass, the guitar, the percussion...it all fits together perfectly. The song is explosive and upbeat, and it's even got a little harmonica here and there. It talks about being an individual and not letting little things
get to you.
Definitely one of Green Day's best songs. 10+/10
12. Macy's Day Parade: A slower way to end an album, Macy's Day Parade is 100% acoustic guitar, with a little bass here and there, and hardly any percussion. Although many people may assume that it's a horrible song just by reading the description, it showcases how mature they can
be. Billie's voice sounds flawless, and although the bass line is simple, it really makes an impact on the song. 9/10
Overall, Warning is a great album that you definitely won't want to
miss. 10/10
This is by far one of the best cds I've ever heard. My favorite from Green Day. My favorite song ever is Castaway. People that are calling Green Day posers really need to stop. Wow, they tried something new! Let's sue them!!! NO. They've been a band longer than I've lived on this planet. (no, I'm not from outer space...I'm just 12) Green Day teaches people to be who they are and that they shouldn't be afraid to show some self respect. Take Minority for example-Stepped out of the line/like a sheep runs from the herd/Marching out of time/to my own beat now-They want you to show your individuality people! Have those haters of Green Day even heard their music? Have you given them a chance. Wow, you hear one sample of a song-maybe-and you think they suck. THATS NOT GIVING THEM A CHANCE!!! Stop trashing, start listening.
Warning-Title track! I love how they added the sirens and special sounds
Blood, Sex, & Booze-Sorta inappropriate name but I think he sounds sexy(yes, I like Billie!) and it really is a good song
Church on Sunday-I repeat it alot. A nice fun song
Fashion Victim-One of my other favorites on the cd. This song is so cool
Castaway!!!-My favorite song...EVER. It gets annoying if you repeat it over and over at a time, I know from experience but I still love it none the less
Misery-A different song. I sing it alot. I've memorized so many songs (I own four cds) and this is a definate favorite to sing.
It also has a spanish/french feel to it with different instruments that you hear featured in those types of songs.
Deadbeat Holiday-I love the lyrics. And Billie's cat, Zero, really did die in the dryer. So sad.
Hold on-An overall great song. Billie plays the harmonica in this song. I especially love when they come to the middle of the song where you hear like, a stomping sound...love it all.
Jackass-They don't say the word in the song so thats a good thing for a kid like me. "Everybody loves a joke but no one likes a fool"-so true.
Waiting-A feel-good song, I can almost relate. I love how you think the song is over in the middle, then all of a sudden, he goes onto saying "Dumbstruck, color me stupid." That's cool
Minority-Alot of the times I seem to forget this song is on here. It is one of my favorites but I'm so used to the setup of International Superhits, where they go straight from Waiting to Macy's Day Parade. But I still LOVE this song. Great lyrics, so true.
Macy's Day Parade-Sort of a sad song. But a great end to the cd.
My favorites overall from Green Day:
1)Castaway/Blvd. of Broken Dreams
2)Holiday/Minority
3)Hitchin' a Ride/Whatsername

A true Green Day fan and lover of Billie Joe Armstrong, and all his punk rock glory.
