the previous reviewer was right. Everyone OWNS this CD! it's a million seller and one of is all-time best in terms of chart longevity {at last count it had been on the Country Catalog charts well over 400 weeks}. the first three songs are remakes, all from 1977. the rest of the tracks are all in chronological order: "A Picture of Me Without You" {#5/1972}; "The Grand Tour" {#1/1974}; "Bartender's Blues" {#7/1978}; "He Stopped Loving Her Today" {#1/1980}; "Tennessee Whiskey" {#2/1983}; "The One I Loved Back Then" {#3/1985}; and the album closes with "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes?", which also hit #3 in 1985. If you see a song or two left off, don't worry. Check "Super Hits, Volume Two" for "The Door", "Loving You Could Never Be Better", "Shine On", "Radio Lover", etc. For those who say George Jones stopped having hits in the early '70s, this collection shows otherwise. It's sequel, "Super Hits, Volume Two", picks up where this one leaves off and features several of his under-rated mid '80s hits on Epic. This is just a budget-minded album. The 1982 "Anniversary" is a better choice for MORE hits. of course, the box sets on George that surfaced in 1994 wipe out the importance of any prior "hits" CDs in the eyes of many. yet, for those who aren't THAT serious a fan, this "Super Hits" and it's sequel will do. His 1991-1998 MCA hits are available on another CD called "The George Jones Collection".
A toast of Tennesee Whiskey to the man, the voice that is often emulated, but never duplicated. An American C/W icon in the timeless league as Hank Williams, Sr. No one can croon, belt out a song or touch a heart nerve like Ol George. He can take a song like "He Stopped Loving Her Today..." and take the enrapurted listener to his first love, last love or present love on the rocks. Few entertainers EVER have this power over listeners. Even if you aren't a C/W fan, this will change your mind....! Thanks, George.......from a loyal, grateful fan.
This purchase was made just before I heard about George passing. It is wonderful, and he will live on in his music.
Real country music! George Jones will be sorely missed by those who enjoy country music. I put this on my Kindle.
When George passed I realized I didn't own any of his music. This album is a great place to start.
