after hearing today that someone stabbed george, I felt compelled to put this on and listen again. I was a fan of "Wonderwall Music" thirty years ago, and it has definitely grown on me over the years. This takes up where "Wonderwall Music" left off. Everyone mentions the beautiful "Govinda" but I also love "Bhaja Bhakata-Arati" and the "Hare Krishna Mantra." I really think this music is where George's heart is, he's not the same cat that played the intro to "Roll over Beethoven" as a teenager. As he was being stabbed, he probably was chanting "Hare Krishna." If you even mildly enjoyed Ravi Shankar's side on "Bengla Desh", you should love this.
I'd be happy to recommend this highly, except for two things:
1) The price is high for such a small amount of music, and
2) The earlier CD version had as its bonus track, "Prayer to the Spiritual Masters."
With all due respect to the late John Lennon and his widow, listening to them talk isn't why I would buy a CD of bhakti yoga chanting.
I had been looking for this recording for some time, so I was surprised and happy that Amazon.com was offering it. I've played it several times since receiving it, and it makes you feel like you're sitting in a Hindu temple. "Govinda" is a wonderful track, but the other tracks are just as moving spiritually. The sound quality is "circa 1969" although since George Harrison was involved, the quality is good. If this disc interests you, I would also highly recommend buying George's "Chants of India" which came out a year or so ago; the sound quality of this disc is superior, and the chants resonate to your spiritual core.
George Harrison singing Hindu devotional Kirtans with a temple group from London, circa 1969 or early 70's.
There are better collections of Kirtanwalla (now*) - Krishna Das comes to mind: Try: "Breath of the Heart", or "Live on Earth."
A collector's item. A good addition if you enjoy Krishna Das or Jai Uttal... but unlike either one of them.
Several years ago, I was looking in the International Music section at the Record store, and the Radha Krsna Temple album (an earlier name for this album) popped up at me. When I purchased it and took it home, I was astonished to hear the most beautiful devotional music ever. Several years later, I hear it played any time I visit my Hare Krsna Temple in the mornings, on the request of Srila Prabhupada, the guru who brought this movement from India to the US and UK. High praise, but very well deserved. If you love heartfelt beautiful musuc, you WILL enjoy this album!
