This CD is one of the glories of the Naxos collection. Three of the greatest string quartets in existence, played superlatively by a first rate ensemble, and the sound-engineers come to the party as well. Over the years, many fine accounts of Opus 50 have been committed to disc (the Tokyo Quartet on DG, which is harder to find than El Dorado; the Tatrai on Hungaraton; the Salomon on Hyperion; the Buchberger on Brilliant Classics and the Lindsays on ASV), but the Kodalys run them close in the very least. They are exponents of full-blooded expressiveness - there is no squeezed phrasing or anaemia here. Surprisingly, Naxos did not allocate the Dream or the Frog to the first CD of the Prussians from a marketing perspective (with a trade-back); for all their many merits, Op 50 1 - 3 do not quite command the same degree of interest as the trio on this disc. In any event, buy and listen with confidence to the Master of Masters in this domain.
