Following on from their tentatively, but ultimately well-received EP, Fightstar finally give us a full scale look at what they're all about: namely big, meaty chords; big, meaty vocals (from Simpson at least); big meaty production and, frankly, lackluster lyrics.

The band's talents are shown to their fullest on 'Grand Unification Pt 1', 'Paint Your Target' and 'Mono', though the ending of the latter demonstrates the over-eagerness of producer Colin Richardson to tack that little extra something to the some of the tracks and detract from their quality.

'Sleep Well Tonight' and 'Build an Army' on the other hand are both potentially good tracks spoiled by a feeble and unimaginative verse. Both have their moments, but the songs as a whole are very weak.

Then there are the lyrics:

"I'm alone and self-anaemic

But sometimes you wake up

If I could hold this rope inside my hands

You'd understand they let us down"

What...?

The whole album is full of verses put together for the sake of the rhyme and practically every track is about someone sleeping/waking too much/little. After Palahniuk's Laughter, we shouldn't be surprised, but the lyrics often jarr.

However, like Palahniuk's Laughter, this album is about the sound as a whole. Charlie Simpson's voice is perfectly suited to the music (perhaps why he sounded so rubbish when trying to sing pop songs). He regularly (and thankfully) drowns out singing partner Al Westaway and produces a sound you wouldn't expect from someone of his tender years. And there's little restraint to the playing; the band merrily going all out to fill each track with as much noise as possible, without it all becoming a tiresome drone, so expect to be banging your head a lot.

Grand Unification is a good, but not great, debut album and Fightstar need to garner some experience - as well as some more focused production and legible lyrics - if they're to have any hope of releasing a superior follow-up.

Grand Unification may take some time to grow on you, especially if you've heard their sophomore album before this one. Surprisingly, Fightstar's sound is quite similar to that found on their latest album, and at times they surpass the greatness of "One Day Son This Will All Be Yours."

Some really cool songs of mine are: "Grand Unification," "Paint Your Target," and "Mono." Each of these tracks convey Fightstar's catchy yet haunting vibe, and you'll have them stuck in your head in no time.

Fightstar's Grand Unification is a good beginning for this UK band, and it is easy to see how they have evolved into the band they are today. Give them a listen, if you like catchy rock music with a lot of insight and emotion I guarantee you'll like them.

ok i first heard fightstar awhile ago and have been very interested in the direction of this band. A major factor which i think was effective towards people is the lead singer Charlie, yes he was in a pop band, amazingly storming into the post hardcore seen and WOOOOOOOW!!!! pulling it off pretty damn good. I think he deserves massive credit and surely anyone knocking this band because of his presence should seriously back off. Now Fightstar, well like i said i've been keen to see what there music was going to sound like and have found a sound in their uniqueness, each and every song on Grand Unification is perfect, even the opening 1+ intro which draws in a sound of beauty and attention, the amazing cross over from to sleep into Grand unifacation is brilliant and the rest of the album follows on a high path of excellence. Dan Haigh plays some awesome bass quality is tight and timing is soooo good!

Ok break down of some tracks,

10. Mono- great sound here, amazing build up and final deliverance is outstanding, emotion is high here and the track blends so good.

3. Waste A Moment- awesome vocal work, bass is nice and powerful, one of fav's on album

5. Paint Your Target- the melody at the beggining plays great into the hard scream from charlie, again amazing bass, just pure genius

7. Last Conversation- another great melody played along to some more quality bass, one of the strongest chorous, heavy guitars

4. Sleep Well Tonight- a very strong and heavy track, Charlie gives it all here, sings his balls off, good emotion charged track

8. Lost Like Tears In The Rain- a great melody track, crossing from crunching hard riffs into soft and beautiful melody, drumming is solid and well paced

I could write a hell of alot more, but id rather you listened to it yourself, i am hugely fond of this album and from start to finish it blows out strong emotion, great lyrical and inspiraing musical talent, Fightstar the name i am so looking forward to seeing live, i also love the artwork in the booklet and cd cover and back. Best move ever for a band memeber of charlies background his talent shines through here proudly, Grand Unification rocks in so many ways, a solid album throughout, Fightstar reign supreme in my cd player now

FIGHTSTAR,FIGHTSTAR,FIGHTSTAR!!!! i wanna hear this chant at a live performance and i think the entire crowd will agree.

It's not my kinda music, so I have put 4 stars but I could have given 5. This album have surprised me positively.

1-To Sleep: El disco se abre con una excelente introducci?n, es una pista de 1:36 minutos, donde dos guitarras ac?sticas llevan la melod?a muy tranquila y agradablemente, y le acompa?a un punteo de guitarra r?pido, tocado como un arpa... junto con unos toques de piano.

Es una canci?n pr?cticamente instrumental, y al final de la misma aparece la voz de Charlie, haciendo coros, coros m?s lejanos, susurros terror?ficos... que repiten la palabra "Sleep".

Crean una atm?sfera de incertidumbre, parece que todo duerme pero hay una sospecha.

Ojal? hubiera m?s Intros en los cds y fueran como esta. Y en el final la guitarra el?ctrica despierta.

2-Grand Unification Part 1: 2? single extra?do, es la primera parte de la canci?n (la segunda parte es la pen?ltima canci?n del disco).

Comienzan metiendo ca?a en la introducci?n. Charlie es el cantante y en el estribillo responde Alex 2 veces completandolo.

Fightstar deja constancia de su potencial instrumental y de su fuerte bater?a, con una parte instrumental potente despu?s.

Conforme se llega al final van apareciendo los gritos Screamo y los coros. Engancha mucho esta canci?n por su fuerza y energ?a.

Quiz? la canci?n que m?s me engancha y est? muy bien colocada como 2? corte, terminando con unos gritos amenazantes

3-Waste A Moment: Tercer y actual single, los eligen bien, otra que me parece destacable en el cd. Una canci?n lenta pero con partes muy potentes. El comienzo es suave y va creando una atm?sfera m?s extra?a y oscura, como lo refleja su videoclip.

Gritos screamo salvajes de Charlie en la parte final. Quiz? nadie lo piense porque las voces son muy diferentes, pero creo que Fightstar abarca varios estilos y tiene bastantes partes y atm?sferas que recuerdan a Evanescence, y en esta canci?n aparecen.

4-Sleep Well Tonight: Otro t?tulo con la palabra "Sleep". Hay momentos que si invitan a relajarse, pero te despiertan muy bruscamente, es una de las caracter?sticas de la banda. El comienzo me recuerda a Goo Goo Dolls.

Comienza cantando Charlie, despu?s tiene su parte Alex (con su emotivo timbre agudo), y Charlie le responde. Arranca lo que parece el estribillo y se ralentiza, acompa?ada de un machac?n ritmo de guitarra m?s metal que otra cosa que est? bien logrado y contrasta con la parte suave. Cambios de ritmo, un Screamo, y termina la primera parte con agudos y susurros: "Sleep Well Tonight". Despu?s del segundo estribillo aparece la parte instrumental, con una fuerte base de guitarra que da paso a la melod?a cantada de 2 maneras por Simpson: la potente y la suave y aguda.

5-Paint Your Target: Single debut de Fightstar. Comienza con una bonita introducci?n de guitarra, muy parecida al "Interlude" del primer disco de Busted, pero m?s r?pida. (Con esto sabemos hemos averiguado que el Interlude es de ?l). Un salvaje Screamo que entra de repente termina con ella.

Comienza Alex cantando lead vocals y Charlie le responde. Un buen juego de voces que termina con Simpson arrancando el fuerte pre-estribillo.

Como es habitual Charlie canta mas y se lleva la mayor?a de las partes en las canciones y los estribillos, y entonces Alex pasa a corista.

Quiz? la canci?n m?s pegadiza y eso es bueno, m?s en un grupo como Fightstar que no hace precisamente m?sica pegadiza.

Se nota porqu? lo escogieron como primer single, es de lo mejor. Aunque hay muchas buenas canciones.

6-Build An Army: Otra buena introducci?n musical acompa?ada de unos susurros de clamor. Comienza a cantar "Chase" suave y agudo en un sonido muy atmosf?rico que se rompe con la voz de Charlie cantando con gritos guturales "Crash...", recordando a Linkin Park. Despu?s canta Alex y el "Crash" aparece otra vez rompiendo la canci?n.

Ya nos vamos a costumbrando a los estribillos melanc?licos de Fightstar.

Despu?s del 2? estribillo se sacan de la manga una base Heavy-metalera que gustar? a mucha gente, muy bien logrado.

Es uno de los temas m?s completos del disco y por todo quiz? por ello lo sacan de siguiente single.

7-Here Again (Last Conversation): Destacan los acordes del principio, que tambi?n aparecen en los versos. En ellos aparece el bajo de Dan haci?ndose notar. Otro gran estribillo. En la parte central un juego corto contundente de guitarra y bater?a aparece luego. Llega el puente y el estribillo final sin gritos por primera vez; hac?a falta despu?s de la anterior canci?n, la m?s potente del disco.

Lead vocals: Charlie. Backup vocals: Alex.

8-Lost Like Tears In Rain: Canci?n rescatada de su primer EP, en una diferente versi?n, quiz? m?s sobrecargada de instrumentaci?n que la original, que era m?s efectiva.

No me extra?a que la hayan rescatado ya que es de las

mejores canciones del grupo. El estribillo recuerda en el estilo a "Why" de Busted (me gusta m?s "Why")."Why" suena m?s a Fightstar que a Busted, y no importa que no grit? ah?, podr?an perfectamente meterla en un disco de Fightstar sin que se notara y ser?a de lo mejor para la mayor?a de la gente.

Voz principal Charlie, Alex s?lo coros.

9-Open Your Eyes:Se alternan las suaves vocales intimistas de Charlie y Alex. Fightstar no todo son gritos y fuerza, sus partes tranquilas y su m?sica alternativa es algo a destacar.

Al final aparecen los violines y las cuerdas.esto es bueno para Fightstar y les da un concepto m?s elegante. La canci?n m?s suave del cd, aqu? tampoco hay ning?n Screamo, bien hecho.

Un dato curioso, el estribillo dice "If you could open your eyes", el t?tulo de la canci?n es un fragmento de ?l. Se supone que est?s durmiendo todav?a desde el principio del disco,

10-Mono:(Est? en el EP tambi?n).Es LA balada del disco por as? decirlo. Al principio me parec?a aburrida y Mono-tona, sobre todo por su larga duraci?n (m?s de 6 minutos), pero tiene una bella melod?a con una ambientaci?n es tranquila y agradable, m?steriosa y oscura.

Hay varias partes, la instrumentaci?n se va haciendo cada vez menos simple cada vez, para terminar con una instrumentaci?n fuerte y atmosf?rica, y los gritos y Screamos de fondo no faltan ni siquiera en esta balada en la parte final.

Termina la canci?n con unas notas de intriga. Estos ambientes oscuros le gustan a Fightstar y lo demuestran en todo el disco,

me parecen interesantes. En definitiva es una buena balada.

11-Hazy Eyes:(Est? en el EP tambi?n). Comienza as? como con ambiente de Rock alternativo, cantando Charlie y Alex, una estrofa de pregunta-respuesta entre los 2.

En el estribillo Charlie canta: "I don't" y Alex responde: "need you".

Cabe destacar un momento interesante, donde despu?s de los m?sticos agudos de Alex, se suelta un grito Emo

buen?simo. Vaya con el emo!!

Otra referencia a los ojos, "Hazy eyes" significa ojos nebulosos.

12-Grand Unification Part 2: Comienza hablando una voz (cre?a que era Alex), es una balada con piano (Charlie toca) que recuerda bastante a Coldplay.

Se alternan las voces solistas de Charlie y Alex, hasta que de pronto, bruscamente se interrumpe ese ?ntimo pero oscuro abiente cuando empieza a cantar gritando Charlie. Despu?s aparece una fr?a brisa (que parece sacado de un mundo de fantas?a peligroso), que da paso a un final en el que la misma voz del principio habla otra vez.

13-Wake Up: Un broche de oro para el disco. Si se abr?a con "To Sleep" (A dormir), se cierra con "Wake Up" (Despierta).

Es curioso pero el mensaje es raro, te dicen que te duermas cuando empiezas a escuchar el disco y cuando se acaba pretenden despertarte. Mensaje extra?o.

En la canci?n las "lead vocals" corren a cargo de Alex y Charlie (que canta el gran estribillo). Una balada as? m?s o menos Emo.

Al final comienzan los "Wake up, wake up...", comienzan suave, despu?s empiezan con fuerza y se a?ade un coro de voces.

Es como si estuvieras durmiendo y poco a poco intentaran despertarte.
