that "Good Times" was released as an album in 1974. To fully contextualize Elvis' song selections in the '70's (not Ernst Jorgensen's, with all due respect), one should own "Good Times". It is, along with "Promised Land" (the original and not the reissue) and "From Elvis Presley Boulevard", one of my favorite Elvis studio releases. It is a revealing look at the pain that Elvis was feeling at that point in his life ("Good Time Charlie's Got The Blues", "Take Good Care Of Her") while still rocking with "Talk About the Good Times" and "I've Got A Feeling In My Body". Buy "Good Times" - you won't be disappointed.
Elvis recorded at the Stax studios in Memphis for this one and did some really good material which got very little promotion.I'VE GOT A THING ABOUT YOU BABY,I GOT A FEELIN IN MY BODY,GOODTIME CHARLIE,LOVING ARMS.FINE ALBUM WITH ELVIS IN GREAT SOULFUL VOICE.ENJOY.
Originally released on LP in 1974, the entire contents of this album were recorded at the Famous Memphis Stax Studios. Many people are not aware that Elvis in fact held two recording sessions at this studio, which were used on 3 different albums. After the great success of the Aloha from Hawaii show in Jan 1973, Elvis was keen to record again in Memphis. American Sound was no longer available, so for 5 days from 21st to 25th July of that year he laid down 10 tracks at Stax, which went onto his "Raised On Rock album". Between the 10th & 16th of December he returned again to the studio on McLemore Avenue, which was a convenient 12 minute drive from Graceland. In that time he taped 18 really excellent songs, 10 of which are on this album. The remaining songs went onto his "Promised Land" album. Song choice is a very personal thing, but of the 3 albums of material Elvis recorded at Stax this is my personal favourite. There is really not one bad track on here, but if you've not heard "Talk About The Good Times" with it's amazing piano solo 'crossing the room' in stereo, then you ought to buy it just for that! This CD is a straight re-issue of the original LP, but painstakingly remastered and sounding better than ever before. It's a snip at $6.98! Buy it!!
This is actually a pretty good album despite the fact that it was a commercial flop. It only managed to climb to 90 on the US album chart but did manage to make the top 5 on the country album chart in 1974. "I've Got A Thing About You Baby" was a top 40 hit while its flip side "Take Good Care Of Her " was a top 5 country hit. "My Boy" would be released as a single in 1975 and reached the top 20 and went all the way to number 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. My favorite song is the country-rocker, "Talk About The Good Times" which I think should have been released as a single. The rockin-Gospel song "I Got A Feelin' In My Body" is also very good. All-in-all, a solid effort!
I always loved this album, since it belongs to the Stax Trilogy. Here we get the original Album mixes again and that's the problem. The Mastering by Vic Anesini is almost perfect, no compression and clipping. But some tracks like "I've Got A Feeling In My Body" and "If That Isn`t Love" sound tiny, Elvis vocals are burried in the mix, they sound like played through a tunnel. Certainley, this release is a improvement over the 90`s release, but the Japanese 24 Bit/ K2 Papersleeve CD has the better soundquality. If you want a CD very close to the original Vinyl Album sounding, than this is the right one for you. Because of the big differences in sound- and performance quality, only 3 Stars.
