With her vibrant voice and elegant phrasing style, plus an amazing range and an ability to scat notes like a horn player, Ella Fitzgerald was simply one of the greatest singers in the history of jazz, and it's virtually impossible to pick up a Fitzgerald collection without running into several tracks of excellence. This one is no exception in that regard, featuring several of her early sides for Decca Records from the late '30s and '40s. Fitzgerald's strongest period came a decade later for Verve Records, which doesn't make this set the ideal introduction to this incredible talent, but it's still darn good. ~ Steve Leggett, All Music Guide
