(Translation: It's hard to say it face to face, but who cares?) You may be somewhat hesitant to try to brave singing along to a song where you've absolutely no idea what you're singing or how to pronounce it, but trust me - just try listening to "Lo Echamos a Suertes" (track 2 on this cd, Ella Baila Sola) and then try singing along, and you'll get hooked. The infectious melody along with the great, insightful lyrics and the upbeat, flowing pulse/rhythm will have you boppin' around and hitting the "repeat" button over and over ... and over again! The whole CD is an incredible variety of wonderful songs, like Lo Echamos a Suertes, and Amores de Barra, all with a surreal common thread that keeps you listening time and time again. If you know Spanish, the words are great, if not, the words are still extremely fun to sing along with. Ella Baila Sola is one of those rare, unbelievably talented groups that you wish came along more often - you just can't listen to this CD enough! It's, well, [a] brilliant recording!

Beautiful music...kinda mellow, girly, folky with strong voices and great lyrics....If you like Sarah McLauglin, Natalie Merchant, Tori Amos, and the likes...you will like this. Es cierto. Treat yourself.

Ella Baila Sola may yet prove to be the best pop group in recent Spanish music (move over Duncan Dhu and Presuntos Implicados), and their first album highlights their brilliant ability to balance stylish guitar pop and soulful ballads, even throwing in some salsa-oriented Latin numbers for the Hispanophile purist. These talented women write their own lyrics, compose their own music and play their own instruments, all the while drawing you into their particular performing style. I highly recommend this first album, which will undoubtedly prove to have a much longer shelf life than their second album, E.B.S. Enjoy the poetic flow of their ballad lyrics, especially "Lo echamos a suertes" and "Por ti". Allow yourself to get swept up in the catchy beat and cool lyrics of their upbeat songs, especially "Amores de barra" and "Muere el silencio". Finally, for a real treat with a sarcastically amusing feminist tone, enjoy "Mujer Florero". I promise you will be singing all of these songs for years to come!

I lived abroad in Spain for a semester and my Spanish "sisters" were always talking about this group. I broke down and bought the album (even though I didn't have a CD player with me) and fell in love with it. I kept it in my car for months and found myself "scream singing" to most of the songs, especially Amores de Barra and Mejor Sin Ti-both quite empowering. The songs are upbeat and catchy. If you don't speak Spanish you'll likely pick up the lyrics anyway. A great buy!!

I stumbled upon a live performance of this group on Spanish television while flicking through the channels one late Thursday night in March of '99. Had not the stunning looks of both female singers sufficed to capture my attention, their music sure woke me up in a heartbeat. On their first album, Ella Baila Sola play a kind of sophisticated poprock with a predominantly acoustic feel, of a quality yours truly has seldom heard before - or since. For the most part their excellence can be attributed to the achievements of both leading ladies, who do a terrific job singing together and alternating lead and backing vocals. Only one weaker track on display here, notably "Besos de hielo", although the reggae influenced rhythms of "Mujer florero" might not be everyone's cup of Orange Pecoe. The rest is pure listening enjoyment. "Lo echamos a suertes", "Amores de barra", the riveting "Victoria" and the memorable ballad "Cuando los sapos bailen flamenco" stand out as prime examples of great latin mellow rock. The lyrics are brilliant, or so i've been told. Even for one such as myself, whose command of the Spanish language is about as lacking as his pole-vaulting skills, they invite to sing along at the top of one's lungs. While a tape recording of the aforementioned concert wore down my walkman (or the other way around) at least once every other day for months on end, i would not rest until i managed to secure a copy of their two CD releases. Among the hundreds of new acts i've been introduced to in this particular year, they rank without a doubt as my no. 1 musical discovery of 1999. Which ought to tell you something about how good they are...
