This album is one of the great ones and it is just ashame that this awesome band didn't get the recognition in the seventies when they deserved it. This album gives you alittle bit of everything. Just when you are all relaxed listening to "Sylvia's Mother", it comes out and hits you with the comical and feel good song "Cover of the rolling stone", and you even get alittle of that great disco sound from my personal favorite "Sexy Eyes" and "When your in love with a beautiful woman", I couldn't end this review without mentioning the extremely sexy "Sharing the night together". I just hope that Dr. Hook themself shop at amazon and see that there are true fans out there like me who appreciate their music. Buy this album!!!! You will not be sorry.
I am a big fan of Hook. Granted that I am 30 years old my parents listened to them and it grew on me. Their music, lyrics (help from Shel Silverstein) and humor rank them in my heart as one of the best all around bands in popular music. I wish that a reunion would be in the works. By the way this album compiles all the great tracks Hook made (72-80). These songs are classics and are ageless! Listen to this alubum with your loved one. It is very romantic and funny. If you want to go deeper into Hook purchase their 1st LP and Sloppy Seconds. That's how I got hooked! While listening to them keep your ear open for lyrics and music. The two alway intertwine in all of their songs. I hope you will enjoy this album and the others. Thank You for your time!
I'd forgotten all about Dr. Hook, to tell the truth, until looking around for something by another 70's band. Then I saw this and started reading the track titles, and so many memories just started coming back. The band shows something for everyone. For the raunchier side, with somewhat sarcastic songs like "Cover of Rolling Stone," what-was-I-thinking songs like "Only Sixteen," lush love songs like "A Little Bit More," and my favorite, the funky disco feeling tracks like "Sexy Eyes," and "When You're In Love With A Beautiful Woman." And the best part is, these songs all seem true-to-heart. You feel like you could actually get somewhere with a girl by singing "Sharing The Night Together.' A very pleasant musical treat. Spend 40 minutes going back to the 70s with this CD. You won't regret it, and may also wind up hoping your picture's on the cover of Rolling Stone.
I, too, must rate this Hook VALENTINE among the top THREE cds I own, Tina's Nutbush City being another. DO play this with your loved ones. Repeatedly! The Shel Silverstein lyrics' thang is SUCH a mighty fine BONUS. Tracks 13 and 15 ("Years From Now" and "Sweetest of All") make for absolutely perfect waltzing as well as Argentine tangoing, and "A Couple More Years" and "Sylvia's Mother" are unequaled. These men ROCK! Softly. I find their music to now be a passion of mine --- and I am 53 and didn't really 'discover' them until someone mentioned the Shel / Hook lyrics' connection to me about six months ago -- after raising up to adulthood three sons on Silverstein lyrics! I know you WILL like this one.
Dear Doctor Hook- Where are you?
This CD is full of beautifully upbeat romantic tunes- with a little humor thrown in for good measure.
Doctor Hook and his band don't LOOK anything like they sound. A lead singer in jeans and an eyepatch, backup band that has long scraggly hair- what a wacky combination.
Doctor Hook- come back. We need you! You are the perfect example of NOT judging a book by it's cover.
Wonderful music here!
