This CD set includes most of the songs from the movies Doris made in the early 50's. There are great numbers from "On Moonlight Bay", "I'll See You In My Dreams", "By The Light Of The Silvery Moon", "Calamity Jane", "April In Paris" and "Love Me Or Leave Me". Perfect for fans like me who know and love Doris best from seeing her in these films.
This set contains many of the very best of Doris Day's 'film star' period -- late 1940s early-to-mid 1950s -- plus contemporary studio recordings -- several of which were with singers such as Johnny Ray. Why has it taken so long to come up with many of these masterpieces on CD??
I bought (and still have) many of these on 78s in the 1950s and thought -- as a young boy -- that Doris Day was absolutely wonderful and about as good a singer as you could get. I still hold that view, having listened more recently, and believe that when the historical balances finally settle she will be rated right up there with the very best -- Sinatra, Fitzgerald, etc. Her timing, her breath control, her sparkle, and her sheer loveliness ensure that. Maybe she fell from the media's eye because she was apolitical and, as she said, she enjoyed being a girl!! How un-PC!
Question remains: why is this box so ridiculouly expensive ...You can get the best 4-CD sets of the greatest jazz stars such as Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins for less ... What is up here?? Is Doris included????
Bear Family's box covering the recordings of Doris Day from 51-55. Along with the other 3 boxes in the series, you will be able to spend well over 24 hours with records of this angelic voice. Enjoy it once , and I'll bet you play it again in less than a week !
I consider myself fortunate for being able to get my hands on the box set, especially at a very reasonable price.
As stated on the packaging, this set spans 1951-1955 and cover most of the songs from her movies and her usual pop songs during her stent at Columbia records. While there are only 5 CDs, the 100 page hardcover book that comes with it is stellar.
What a pure, pure voice Doris Day has. She and Patsy Cline, who I also feel had a pure voice are two of my all time favorite female vocalists.
I have had my eye on all four of the Doris Day Bear Box sets since they came out in 1995, but I could not afford them. I gave up in '95 and did not try again until the 2011, when I was able to within a year collect them all.
I am lucky enough to now own all four sets by being patient, waiting for the good deals. I really did not think it possible and it took a long time, but it happened.
Also, take a look at the remaining 3 box set in the Bear Family collection:
,
, and Move Over Darling: 1960-1967.
This is an very good collection of Doris's recording from 1951-1955. The quality of sound reproduction is quite good, as is typical of Bear Family box sets. Included is a 100 page coffee table sized (12 X 12 inch) book that includes discography of the recordings and an extensive array of pictures of Doris, many with those she costarred and/or sang duets with during this period. One reviewer remarks about the excessive price of this set, and I agree. I suspect it is partly due to all the photos in the book. Personally I'd have preferred they skip all that and just sell a box set of the 5 CD's and small booklet with the discography.
I should also note there is a problem with a portion of the Discography. For Disc 5 they give data for less than half of the recordings. I'm not sure what went wrong.
Notwithstanding the above, I'm glad I purchased the set and would do so again.
