What makes this compilation special is two tracks never before released on CD.....the first, the opening medley from her first musical special on tv is a real treat. The track sounds fresh and as if Doris recorded it last week in the studio...the songs..."Secret Love", "Who Will Buy" and "Feelin' Groovy" make you wish she had recorded more during this period of her career. The other track, "The Way We Were" is a bit muddled and has way too much echo and reverb in the recording.....but it is still wonderful to be able to have Ms. Day's recording of this "contempory" song. The CD is a MUST for any Day fan!
This one is hard to find in its original, two-disc format -But it's well worth the price and the effort. Simply put, these are all wonderful tracks and you get 40 of them! With so many Doris Day compilations out there it can be confusing for collectors and fans. This is by far the best, most inclusive compilation of her movie songs and covers.
Pillow Talk is one of my favorite Doris Day movies and I love the song Pillow Talk that she sang as the opening theme song, I looked for a long time for a CD with that song on it and I finally found Pillow Talk on this CD and though it doesn't sound like the same recording used in the movie it is pretty good but even though I bought this for Pillow Talk my favorite songs on the CD are Moonlight Bay, and By The Light of the Silv'ry Moon. I highly recommend this CD, it is great!
Doris Day, it seems, is more popular than ever! And rightfully so. She has kept us smiling with her movies and singing with her music for well over 40 years. This new Best Of... disc, entitled THE MAGIC OF DORIS DAY, was released last year in the UK and Australia, where Ms Day has some of her most loyal fans. This CD provides the perfect cross-section of Day's varied musical styles.
All the great hits are here, including "Secret Love", "It's Magic", "Sentimental Journey", "Que Sera, Sera", "Everybody Loves a Lover", and "Lullaby of Broadway".
The Doris Day fans will also enjoy "Love Me or Leave Me" (taken from the soundtrack album of the same name), "Close Your Eyes" (from the divine DUET album with Andre Previn's Trio), "Fly Me to the Moon" (from LATIN FOR LOVERS, Day's personal favourite of all her solo albums); and "A Very Precious Love" (the vocal hit from the Natalie Wood drama MARJORIE MORNINGSTAR).
The CD ends with two bonus, never-before-released tracks. The first comes from Day's 1971 television special THE DORIS MARY ANNE KAPPELHOFF SPECIAL, a gangbusters medley of "Secret Love", "Who Will Buy?" and "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)".
The second bonus track is taken from her 1975 special, DORIS DAY TODAY, which marked her 30th anniversary in showbusiness. Her touching, emotional rendition of "The Way We Were" ends the CD in grand fashion.
Doris Day continues to charm new generations with her breezy, fresh music and movies. Last month she was honoured at the Grammy Awards with a long-overdue Lifetime Achievement Award. Let's all celebrate the magic of Doris Day with this excellent new tribute CD.
