Doris Day never disappoints her fans, she is interpreting the following songs in a brilliant way:
1. Silver Bells
2. I'll Be Home for Christmas
3. Snowfall
4. Toyland
5. Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!
6. Be A Child At Christmas Time
7. Winter Wonderland
8. The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)
9. Christmas Present
10. Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas
11. The Christmas Waltz
12. White Christmas
13. Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly [bonus track]
14. I've Got My Love to Keep Me Warm [bonus track]
15. Let No Walls Divide (Overdub Version) [bonus track]
Hope you'll enjoy it the same way I do!
I had originally heard Doris Day's version of "The Christmas Song" on a Holiday Compilation album many, many years ago, and that song remained in my head to this day. I recently discovered the source of that gem...her 1964 Christmas Album. As a fan of Chritmas Albums from their "Golden Age" of the '50's and '60's, it simply doesn't get any better than this...beautifully orchestrated arrangements with Ms. Day in prime voice. The overall mood of this album is soft, mellow and dreamy, as Ms. Day glides you along from one holiday classic to the next. Her rendition of "Toyland" has an element of of almost "beautiful sadness" to it--enough to make a grown man cry. The three bonus tracks, not from the original 1964 sessions, contrast to the rest of the album, but are worthy of inclusion. Columbia did it up right with a flawless digital transfer, adding the three bonus tracks and elegant packaging to boot. This import is a must have if you like Christmas Standards sung by a one of the best (perhaps under-rated) vocalists of her time. The domestic Doris Day release "Personal Christmas Collection", contains 10 songs from this album, but with five vintage recordings from her big band days as a girl singer with Les Brown. Hold out for this complete Import version. Why this CD is not in general release domestically is a mystery to me...it is, quite simply, one the best!
THIS ALBUM ORIGANALLY HAD 12 TRACKS,BUT INSTEAD IT HAS 9. AMAZON.CO.UK HAS THE ORIGANAL 12 TRACK ALBUM WITH 3 MORE TRACKS. SO I WOULD RECOMMEND THE ORIGANAL LP FROM 1964 OR THE ONE FROM AMAZON.CO.UK. DORIS DAY IS GREAT TO LISTEN ANY TIME OF YEAR
Can you believe Doris' wonderful holiday album from the 60's came to CD with only nine of the twelve songs originally included on the LP? Why that was, I'm not sure. Later her "personal" collection of holiday songs was released and, lo and behold, there were the three selections not included on her earlier release. When I purchased an eight-disc set of music she recorded in the 60's, well, there were the twelve songs from the original album! And now, in this 2007 release, fans of Doris get the entire "Doris Day Christmas Album," along with selections recorded much earlier (except for "Let No Walls Divide"). Doris' original 60's album and the songs she chose embrace the listener in the wonder of the holiday season. Romantic, lush, quiet, beautifully sung and orchestrated, it's an invaluable addition to anyone's Christmas collection, especially for those old enough to appreciate the contribution to our pop and holiday music made by this wonderful singer. It's a great album to put on during the peace of a holiday evening, candles lit, tree lights blazing, the listener able to take the time to acknowledge, as does Doris through her music, the beauty of the season.
To me this is the very best version of one of the best Christmas albums ever recorded! Columbia sure knew their business better than anyone else!
