I just have to say..wow! I knew this was gonna be good, but I didn't know it was gonna be THIS good. I've never seen Dolly live & have only ever seen her do 1-2 songs at a time on talk or awards shows. I've liked her most recent bluegrass stuff, but this DVD showcases what makes her a one of a kind talent. She's truly one of the most gifted songwriters in any field of music. Her songs are equally poignant, funny, and honest in a way hardly any music is anymore. Plus she can take the oddest cover & make it her own. On top of that she performs everything with the gusto of somebody who's enjoying every minute of it. Even her semi-embarassing mid-80's pop crossover material is redeemed here with beautiful acapella versions.
I'm not particularly a fan of country music, but good music is good music no matter what form it takes. And this is good. Very good.
If you are a big fan of Dolly like me, you will enjoy this concert. I do not know why Dolly has waited so long to record a show at DollyWood. I like the acoustic music/bluegrass performance and instrumentation that she uses in the show.
I go to DollyWood every year now for quite a few years, and I never get tired of the park. Especially at Christmas. It is breath taking.
I love the Irish song that she wrote, and of course a lot of her old hits-Coat of Many Colors, Applejack ,Tennesse Mtn. Home and others. There are a lot of new materials on the show that has been recorded on her 3 bluegrass albums that have been realesed over the past 4 years.
Dolly makes you laugh, cry-makes you wish you were there on the front row during the taping of the show.
Dolly is a first class entertainer and she loves her fans as much as we love her.
Music is great, artisitry is strong but the crowd shots show folks who are watching the latest version of "fiber's finest moments!" Get over seeing them and sit back into a strong concert film.
It is a concert film that is filmed with respect and a certain (deserved) aspect of awe. Ms Parton works the material, the crowd, the band, and her standing as Icon while seeming to have the best time of all (save for the drummer on _Stairway To Heaven_). Working hard in terms of serving the variety of material (and styles), Ms Parton is in strong strong form.
The show is in a larger venue than others but sounds as I remember it in a smaller space. Even if you are not "country folk", you should still add this to your collection of well documented music. The version of _I Will Always Love You_, as captured, shows exactly what it means when an artist connects with the material. You might expect _Jolene_ to be the gem of the catalogue Ms Parton glows with but it is _I Will Always Love You_ ( I know I know) that Ms Parton drives home, drives hard, and sinks deep into the heart. Smitten? Sure, how can you not be when surrounded with genuine banter to the audience and a wide experience of music.
I stressed the old school hits because it is those that we have seen/heard and often those are the hardest for artists to keep fresh. Not enough can be said in terms of the power of Ms Parton's return to bluegrass. Each of those albums are must haves on so many levels.
Don't expect Ms Parton to look like a million bucks in terms of costuming (the shoes, girl, the shoes). Thankfully, the cinematographer captures her waist up and that's all we need, that, the voice, the stories, and her energy.
dolly parton has done it again, shes gives her best performance ever with this concert dvd, full of her classic hits to her more recent bluegrass outings!! never a dull moment and never sounding better dolly certinly knows how to throw one heck of a concert!! also there is a double cd by the same name {a must have to any cd collection},dolly is always the best!!!!!
