This was Diana Ross' last appearance with The Supremes and it was a great performance live. Ironically my favorite group split up on my 14th Birthday on January 14th, 1970. I still have hope for a reunion with Diana, Mary and Cindy one day! Maybe on my Birthday!
Its a shame that this event was not properly recorded on video, as well as an album. This should have been treated as important as TCB, or On Broadway....C'mon Berry, what were you thinking, other than separating Diana from The Supremes? A historic piece of musical history should have been recorded for all time Where is it?????????????????
I confess to being the type of fan unaffected by Diana's inevitable departure. After a week long engagement, this final evening's performance ended the exciting, if sometimes turbulent 60s and welcomed in the 70s. Diana's singular performances on "My Man" and the prophetic "Didn't We" reinforced my excitement for what indeed was forthcoming. The lacquered wigs were dated even then. That is one of the reasons it was hard for me to envision The Supremes remaining relevant, at least to my vibrant record buying generation. Though the post-Diana Supremes had some good material, but, they sorely lacked identity.
I naively cheered marywilson on during her campy rendition of "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You". I often wondered why Florence nor Cindy were given the solo spot for just a singular chance.
But Diana's star turn on "Didn't We" said everything I needed to hear. Her ad libbing at the end became signature. She would give us a similar performance on the "Touch Me in the Morning" album with "We Need You". It ripped my heart to shreds.
"T.C.B.", a personal fave kicks off the evening. While not as strong as the original soundtrack version missing The Temptations, it is an appropriate way to get the show going.
Listening to the interchange between Diana and the audience on "Someday We'll Be Together" and "Aquarius/Let the Sunshine In" may seem a little overly long to the casual, fair weather fan, but, the true devotees listened intently to every exchange and listened repeatedly..
So for "One Shining Moment" from 1970-1972 and then briefly again in 1976, we enjoyed a two-for-one stock split while the Jean Terrell led Supremes made 2 or 3 solid albums and Diana evolved or rather exploded like a Roman candle into the megastar she remains to this day! Thanks for the memory to relive digitally.....but, I prefer its simple, original title, " Farewell". That says it all. In the words of my beloved, belated slightly koo koo friend, Charles Harris, "I know that's right".
This rare finale concert for Diana Ross & the Supremes is great!!! I luv this CD set. I was blessed enough to find a brand new copy and I cherish it. Miss Ross has moments where she gets intimate with the audience and even jokes. If you have the pleasure of finding this box set, get it. I pray that one day that a video will be released to go along with this fabulous soundtrack.
The recording was great but I will not pay over $50.00 for a CD. I have seen the Supremes Live on stage for less than $172.00
