Review
With this, Depeche Mode not only tasted huge success for the first time but created a true '80s classic -- as it turned out, one of many. If one song had to define what synth pop is, was, and would always be about, it would probably have to be this squirrelly, energetic, and sprightly number, bursting with happy feelings and sheer fun, even if David Gahan seems a bit breathless here and there. Besides the flawless original mix, the CD version of the EP includes the separate "schizo mix," which appeared on a separate release as well as becoming the version that concluded Speak and Spell. It's understandable why -- retaining the core of the song, its extended percussion-only intro and lengthy, low-key conclusion expands the track into a true early '80s synth/dance epic. Interestingly, a wholly separate mix of the B-side, "Any Second Now," also ended up on the album as well. The original, instrumental mix adds more synths and overall sound, very much following in the vein of Kraftwerk but adding a more playful touch, just enough, to the crisp, clean atmosphere. Another "altered" mix popped up as well, stretching out the original's flow to even more quietly sweeping heights. ~ Ned Raggett, All Music Guide
