Review - Product Description
Two CD set includes two DVDs and booklet. David Gilmour Live in the Gdansk Shipyard with the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra. This is the first solo live album from Pink Floyd's singer / guitarist, and it captures the magic of his concert held in front of 50,000 people as the final performance of his critically acclaimed 2006 `On An Island Tour.' It features the first ever recording of selected Pink Floyd classics performed with an orchestra. Produced by David Gilmour and Phil Manzanera. It is the first ever live recording with an orchestra of Pink Floyd's `High Hopes' and `A Great Day For Freedom,' the latter performed here as a one off for this special Solidarity anniversary. Playing at this historic concert is Richard Wright - Pink Floyd's keyboard player, Phil Manzanera, Roxy Music guitarist & coproducer of 'On An Island', Guy Pratt -bass player with Pink Floyd & Roxy Music Jon Carin -keyboards & longtime player with Pink Floyd, Steve Di Stanislao - drums, recently with Crosby and Nash, Dick Parry -saxophone and longtime Pink Floyd collaborator.

- wonderful

many of the songs from this concert are same as from the last dvd, 'remember that night'.the question then becomes - so what? As most can guess, each performance of music is always different - each time it is reinterpreted, caressed and massaged into perfection, yet unique. This is the case with Live in Gdansk, and my reaction was one of sheer aural bliss.

I thought the ending of 'take a breath' was transcendent, with Gilmours' and his friends' playing with the Baltic Philharmonic Symphony Orch. was literally stunning. Gilmour's voice is dark chocolate silk on my favorite 'pocketful of stones'. Richard Wright, his last appearance unfortunately, god bless this angel and may he rest in eternal joy, received a roar from the crowd who then broke into a chant of 'richard..richard..' . If you can stay dry eyed after that you are a stronger person then I am.

'Astronomie Dominé' and 'echoes' are simply astounding, aurally perfect.

Gilmour once again soars into comfortably numb, which has been voted the best guitar solo ever performed. These cd's and DvD's are simply something no floyd fan could possibly afford to miss.

the number of songs in this dvd + cd, with the dvd performances of the other included excerpts from concerts and the barn jams, the documentaries, make this set worth every penny it cost.

I don't know how many more concerts can be expected from Gilmour, many of us are getting a bit older, but 'pulse', 'remember' and this concert from Poland are simply gifts that i have been privileged to have experienced. thank you David.

- Best live album of 2008 unquestionably

David Gilmour, well known as the singer and guitarist of Pink Floyd, just released his new live 3-CD/2-DVD collection entitled Live in Gdansk and is a MUST for all DG and PF fans.

There's 2-CDs which feature 23 songs from his Gdansk, Poland performance recorded at the Gdansk Shipyard on August 26, 2006. 15 of the 23 songs (marked with *) are on the third disc and the first of two DVDs in this set which also has a documentary and webpass to download 13 tracks (including "Wots...Uh the Deal (performed at the Gdansk show but left off the CDs for time constraints) on this set).

Gilmour for this last show on his On an Island tour is backed onstage by PF 1987 alum which were keyboard player Jon Carin and bass player Guy Pratt, Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, drummer Steve DiStanislao and the recently deceased Pink Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright. Plus, there's appearances by Zbigniew Preisner (who did the orchestrations and conducts the Baltic Symphony Orchestra) and Leszek Mozdzer on piano.

CD one begins with four from Dark Side of the Moon which are "Speak to Me", "Breathe", "Time" and "Breathe (Reprise)" (all are excellent versions). The next ten tracks are the On an Island* portion of the show this time with an orchestra. "Castellorizon" is amazing. "On An Island" is superb (even without Crosby and Nash's harmonies). "The Blue" trumps the studio version. "Red Sky at Night" is more haunting live with orchestra and Jon Carin's Lap Steel playing counterpointing Gilmour's rare sax playing appearance. Next is a jazzy but rocking "This Heaven". We follow with "Then I Close My Eyes" (with lap steel replacing Robert Wyatt's cornet) and an excellent version. "Smile" is superior to studio counterpart. "Take A Breath" is excellent here. "A Pocketful of Stones" is also superb. We end the first set with a great "Where We Start".

CD 2 starts with a excellent "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" (with wine glass intro). We follow with superb readings of "Astronomy Domine"* and "Fat Old Sun". The atmospheric "High Hopes"* is next and best solo Gilmour version. Next is a 25-minute spellbinding version of "Echoes". "Wish You Were Here" follows and is excellent. We then get a surprise out of "A Great Day For Freedom"*. We end with a jawdropping version of "Comfortably Numb"*.

The second DVD (disc four) contains more pieces from the Mermaid Theater concert from March 7, 2006. Also we have more from AOL's Music Sessions, Live from Abbey Road Studios. Plus we have three Barn Jams included recorded at Gilmour's home in Sussex, England. We also get On an Island in 5.1 Surround Sound. Lastly, there's some Easter Eggs that I cannot give away and you will have to see to find out.

The five disc version (which is only available in the US at Best Buy) includes a third live CD including rare performed tracks like "Dominoes", "Find the Cost fo Freedom", "Coming Back to Life" and "On the Turning Away".

Sadly, this set features the last work of founding Floyd keyboard player Rick Wright who sadly passed away a week before this set's release and is a fitting swan song to the musical soul of Pink Floyd and Gilmour's old friend.

This box set is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

- I bit of bait and switch.

This was an absolutely fantastic concert, i.e. David Gilmour Live at Gdansk.

I wouldn't have gone out of my way to find it had I not seen large excerpts of it on TV (cable) in 2009. The DVD however appears to have substituted artistically and musically important sections of that Live Gdansk concert with section of others (and studio videos) that pale by comparison; and I felt cheated having purchase it.

- David Gilmore 'Live in Gdansk'

If you like the music of Pink Floyd you will love this. This is a beautifully presented package. The art work and booklet are first class. The vinyl is high grade 180gm.There is also a coupon for a free download of the entire thing. However the most important part is the music and I have to say that I have never heard the music of Pink Floyd and David Gilmore sound better. The production values are superb. The sound quality is awesome. It is one ofthe best sounding records I have ever heard.

Buy it you will not be disappointed.

- Great concert dedicated....

...to the most social justice oriented and noble movement in recent history - Solidarity. Big thanks for coming to Poland: David Gilmour, Richard Wright (RIP), Phill Manzanera, other musicians and to all who produced these CDs ! Off course every Pink Floyd/Gilmour fan knows the songs, but I do not care, I did not mind to get another beautiful versions performed with the help of Gdansk's The Baltic Symphony Orchestra. The best from this set? - "Echoes". David's guitar weeps like never before. Awsome !
