Curtis Mayfield’s legacy is enormous. As the main man of The Impressions, he’s recorded some of the finest soul vocal group music of the ‘60s; he’s also helped pioneer funk and soul music.

Not just a singer, he wrote most of his material during a time when it was not the norm for soul artists. He was among the first to openly speak about African American pride and struggle in his songs. Mayfield was also a key originator of Chicago soul; he’s worked with notable artists including Gene Chandler, Jerry Butler, Major Lance and Billy Butler. Mayfield was a brilliant guitarist, much of which were the high lights of The Impressions’ recordings in the ‘60s.
