Review
Curtis Mayfield, who is regarded as a legend by most as the smooth singing soulman who walked with his feet firmly planted in gospel, classic Northern soul and funk, is represented handsomely on a 16-cut single-disc collection of some of his biggest hits of the '70s -- arguably his most creative period. Mayfield's reliance on the emerging polyrhythms of funk and Latin soul were entering his music in a very profound way -- check "Move on Up," the set's second cut, for a prime example. But besides the classic tunes from the Superfly soundtrack -- "Superfly," "Pusherman," and "Freddie's Dead" -- check "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below, We're All Going to Go," from his self-titled debut solo effort. "Kung Fu" from Sweet Exorcist is a track that deeply influenced Prince and the babymaker "Trippin' Out" are also classic moments in a collection that is heavy on grooves and drenched in soul for a great price and fine sound. ~ Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
