This album is just beautiful. I mean, from beginning to end, it creates and maintains a wonderful musical environment that is delightful to occupy. As suggested by the cover art, much of the record is devoted to radiant love songs (I can't get enough of the funk of "In Your Arms Again" and the beauty of "Only You Babe"). This doesn't preclude, however, the inclusion of the lively and infectious "Party Night" (one of the greatest disco songs of all time) and the tracks "Get A Little Bit" and "Mr. Welfare Man", both of which carry the mark of Mayfield's social conscience. Throughout this record, fat horns, uplifting strings, funky rhythm sections laying down deep grooves (plenty of conga for those who dig latin-influenced soul beats), and Mayfield's soft, gentle, and soulful voice spill out of the speakers.
The vibe coming from this record is a beautiful one - this is the upbeat positive Curtis Mayfield at his best (not to disparage any of his more somber efforts). He is without a doubt one of the greatest artists of all time, and it was with my undying love for his music in mind (and my worry that there are many others like myself a half a year ago who have not been properly introduced to Mayfield) that I decided I needed to write this review. Despite his death in 1999, he continues to live on through his music. So pick up this album if you haven't already and sink your teeth into some of the most delicious soul music ever made.
I completely agree with the first reviewers assessment, this is an album of radiant love and longing. Curtis has always been a poet and whether he turns his attention to love, passion, profound thought or social consciousness, he touches you in your heart and reels you in. This is an album where it appears he was having a lot of fun and truly in love. The groove on this album is outstanding, the songs make you think, long of loving and dance all at the same time. Even his trademark social statement "Mr. Welfare Man" has a more of a driving beat to it while still maintaining it's important message.
This is an album for lovers, the opening track "In Your Arms Again (Shake It)" sets the tone and speaks for itself. It has a wonderful intro and the vocals are fantastic, this song reminds me of what it's like to be in passionate love and wanting to share that with your mate. Then you have one of my favorites "This Love Is Sweet", I mean talk about a sultry love song with a gorgeous musical composition behind it! The third track, "P.S. I Love You" is almost like a love letter and has some of the best vocals on the album. I love how Curtis writes the perfect compositions for each song, you have the sexy and perfect use of strings, horns and instrumentation.
The overall feel of this album is just wonderful, you can easily find yourself using this album to "set the mood" with that special someone. It has a wonderful feel and you will truly enjoy the message behind every song. This album was released in 1976 when R&B, Funk and Disco were burning up the airwaves and you get a fill of all the above on this album which is one of it's great strengths. Curtis was truly one of a kind and was on a great streak of albums in the 1970's. This was truly a fun album and one that I enjoy listening to today and relieving some truly wonderful memories in my life.
