Universal Music / Hip-O Select has put together this fine release and deserve high kudos for a job well done. The sound is is fantastic and to have a complete set of Chuck's 50's sides all in one place is just great!
You will hear the early sides like "Maybelline" right through 1959's "Too Pooped To Pop". In between you hear a little studio chatter and a bunch of fun alternate versions and a few songs that were never released. Booklet is very imformative and gives dates, personnel and dates of the releases. I highly recommend this set and sincerely hope there are subsequent volumes to cover the 60's.
A couple of small complaints: I really enjoy the alternate versions, but multiple versions (5 in row for example of "Sweet Little Sixteen") can be a little tiring and I think it may have been nice to either space them out or have the alternate versions on their own disc. The packaging is a bit annoying, I would have preferred separate cases, but these are small issues!
I bought this CD hoping for the original tracks, but didn't realize that it only had live music. Buyers beware...
If one man could claim the title of "the father of rock and roll", then that man would be Chuck Berry. If you look back at the body of his music both in this collection and in the companion collection from the 1960s, then you would find that this man combined a bit of country, a bit of gutbucket blues, sped it all up and created rock and roll. On top of all that, he and Bob Dylan may be the two greatest lyricists in rock and roll history. If you want to see how rock and roll really began, then this set is for you.
Wow!!! This is unbelievable I can't believe there aren't many reviews on this great set of Chuck's complete 50's Chess works! Why is Chuck forgotten to the younger audience today? I find this very mysterious.I am 28 and I have listened to Mr. Berry's outstanding singing since I was 12. Love him! I am visually impaired and I, too, am a musician. This is a must have set for all Chuck Berry fans and to any music fan! Love the studio chatter and alternate takes very much. Would love to hear from any Chuck Berry or music fan!
