- DEEP IN A DREAM

The reason I entitled this review "Deep in a Dream" is because that is the title of the definitive biography of Chet's life. It is called "Deep in a Dream" The long night of Chet Baker" by James Gavin. It is "savagely honest.....impeccably researched, elegantly written." In short he left a great musical legacy, but led a tragic life as an American expatrio because of his heroin habit.

Amazon has samples of all the tunes, so there's not much use in rehashing them except to say that I have many Chet Baker albums, but feel that this is most representative of his music. He also sang with a sort of babyish voice, & did some great work on this album compilation with Jim Hall, Paul Desmond, & his singing on "She was too good to me," "What'll I Do," & his legendary "My Funny Valentine."

Several of the tunes on this album are such that if you like Baker, you'll love this compilation. Many of them are done in live concert & the sound, having been digitally remastered is like it was recorded yesterday. You really should have it, & I thank you for reading my review.
