- Sony BMG installs rootkit, similar to malware, on your PC

Sony BMG Music Entertainment and its partner, UK-based First 4 Internet have developed a software copy protection using a rootkit. Attempting to play their copy protected CD's from a computers CD-ROM or DVD drive installs software automatically. The software is hidden, and cannot be uninstalled without going to the Sony site to download a patch. It's not yet been verified that the software is completely removed even after the upgrade. I suggest you check some of the online resources about this issue.

"A firestorm quickly erupted over what appeared to be an attempt by the music company to retain control over its intellectual property by secretly installing hidden software on the PCs of unsuspecting customers.

Making matters worse, Sony did not disclose exactly what it was doing in its license agreement, Russinovich said. It only mentions that proprietary software to enable copy protection would be installed. The software affects only PCs running the Windows operating system.

"The (license) makes no mention that it's going to install something that's going to be hidden from view, that will constantly consume CPU resources even if I'm not listening to music and it will have no uninstall capability," he said."

Too bad, I really like Celine's music. But I can't bring myself to do business with a company that intentionally installs software that uses resources even when you aren't listening to music, hids from the system, and cannot currently be uninstalled without jeopardizing the functionality of my PC.

- DRM = Dangerous Rootkit Malware

Thanks Sony on behalf of all virus writers. Don't play any of the 20 DRM CDs in your computer or you will likely be infected. Amazon should not still be selling this CD given that is known to cause viruses when played on a PC.

- Great Album but Won't Play on My Car Stereo

Great album. Just keep in mind the CD is copy-protected and as such may not be compatible with computer CD-ROM players, DVD players, game consoles, or car CD stereos. I know for a fact it does not play in my car stereo. Buyer beware.

- There's nothing wrong with the compilation jerks (except the copy-protection)

Celine's needed to put this hits collection together for a long time because she's been in this business for about 25 years, and she's never put out any compilation with all of her French material from when she was a teen to this point. The majority of her hits compilations are either mainly English or just all French songs that she recorded in her teen years (in which many of those songs never really charted). For the first time, she released an album with all the French hits from every French album she's made with no filler. Some of you people are waisting your time giving these horrible reviews, and don't rate so harshly just because of the cd format. Yeah copy-protecting cds blows, but still it's nice to finally have a cd collection of all the French music from "Ce N'était Qu'un Reve" to "Ziggy" to "Tout L'or Des Hommes" to let us know that Celine has never forgotten where she comes from.
