The details surrounding this single-disc compilation make it a rather fascinating listen. Years ago, the person formerly known as Cat Stevens (now Yusef Islam, but born Steven Giorgiou) renounced his work as a pop singer and even sold all his instruments. But at the close of the century, he had something of a change of heart, giving his approval for this retrospective. So, in effect, this disc is the consideration of a past life by someone who is still living -- a strange thing indeed. In this context, it reveals much about the persons Stevens, Islam, and Georgiou, particularly because there seems to have been a lot of love invested in the project. Rather than go in chronological order, the disc offers scattered snapshots from a fine career, both as Brit-pop wunderkind ("Here Comes My Baby") and folk-rock superstar ("Moonshadow"). Die-hard fans will surely have most of these songs, but it's an excellent way to pick up essential tracks, as well as songs from the film {#Harold and Maude} that only appeared on a previous (and inferior) best-of set.
