In and out of their home country (which happens to be the same as mine), CAFE TACVBA is widely recognized as the leading band within the mexican and latin american music scene, and SINO proves right every statement ever made that makes reference to the creative force that drives it forward.
You will definitely won't find a folky sounding avant-garde album such as RE, neither a bizarre-crafted experiment such as the double album masterpiece REVES/YOSOY... please get ready for a collection of fresh-sounding individual masterpieces from a mature band (17 years and counting) who really regard reinvention and evolution as a key ingredient to all their efforts.
In my personal point of view, Cafe Tacuba is not just the best rock band emerged from Mexico on the last 17 years but, perhaps along Babasónicos, one the finest and more interest bands in the latin american scene.
Sino, their last record, in my opinion is a great album. Cafe Tacuba always is searching to experiment and expand their sound, and probably in Sino, they accomplish the second one. The first thing i notice is that the rest of the member participate more often on the vocal tasks and with beautiful results.
The only song i cannot stand is "El Outsider", I'm sorry the lyrics are just terrible. The first time i listened to it, I thought he was using sarcasm but no (like on "El Borrego" from RE). I think that the most un-outsider thing you could do is proclaim the you are an outsider and you don't give a damm about the sistem.
But in general, Sino is a very enjoyable album. Maybe not a Masterpiece as Re, experimental as Revés/Yo Soy or inmediate as Cuatro Caminos, but is a great collections of songs.
OK, I won't go on too long, but these guys RULE!!! I've always been aware of these guys since their 2CD album on Warner Bros "Reyes" which I didn't get at the time. BUT, lately I've gotten into Latin Alternative, and I realized I don't have to understand the language because I don't focus on lyrics ANYWAY...to me, the music is more important...it just has to SOUND cool, and lyrics (as good as they are) are secondary...that's why I can get into music in any language.
Well, I heard that this recent album by the Tacubas was a good entry point and that it was pretty accessible...that and my tastes have evolved from 10 years ago, so I jumped into the pool, and man, am I glad I did...FANTASTIC stuff!!! This album, "SiNo" has a great Britpop sound, somewhere between New Order-ish new wave and Stone Roses jangle, with some Sex Pistols punk thrown into the mix, and even add some Flaming Lips-ish psychedelic excursions...woah...now only if some more US alternative and Britpop fans would jump into the Tacuba pool...they would TOTALLY appreciate these guys!!!
Now, I got the deluxe edition with the 5 videos on DVD...love it even more, espesh their Japanese adventure on "De Acuerdo", which sounds very Sex Pistols fun and the Japanese are way into it.
5 stars, 6 stars??? Try 20 stars...I also bought their 2005 live album "Un Viaje"...lemme jump into that pool right now!!! Wheeee!!!
Every year mediocre bands string together a few passable songs and some filler, get some airplay, win some award, and make a bunch of money. Occasionally, some bands come along who don't care about stuffing their pockets with cash, or a endless mishmash of drugs, sex and superficial glory. Years later we chuckle about those Backstreet Boys, Kid Rock, Korn, New Kids on the Block, Spice Girls and Britney. They are dumping these CDs in the garbage at your local used CD store if you missed out.
Eventually we get tired of the fluff and pull out Radiohead's OK Computer (97), Cibo Matto's Viva! La Woman (96), and Cafe Tacuba's Re (94). We avoid the top 40 stuff that will soon enough fade away and smile when we get something new from the Eels, Rufus Wainwright or Basement Jaxx.
50 years from now when there is more rock music in Chinese, Hindu and Spanish than in English--when us gringos realize there is more than rock in English--the English speakers will realize what a mistake it was to miss out on the best stuff from across the river.
Cafe Tacuba is better. If you don't know their stuff get the CD Reves Yo Soy NOW because it is out of print, don't forget your Re and Cuatro Caminos, add in the newest and be prepared to smile. These guys never cease to amaze. The only thing more amazing than a new Cafe Tacuba CD is that the English only crowd keeps missing out.
Is hard to tell if this CD is a better than the others, what I can tell you is that this CD is amazing, the sound is excelente, the mixes, the lyrics and the voices, from other plannet.
