Review
Picking up where Anthology, Vol. 1 left off, this second volume adds some new interest to a overly represented period in Bob Marley & the Wailers' history. That period, of course, falls in the early reggae age after they had left Studio One but before they linked up with Island Records. The Wailers had launched their own Wail'N Soul'M label in 1966 and Tuff Gong would take its place in the new decade, but like most Jamaican artist-run labels, both foundered on the shoals of distribution, although the latter would eventually overcome this obstacle. The Wailers' own productions would see release abroad, but in comparison to other material from this time, they have been nowhere near as compiled as the rest. Anthology, Vol. 1 tossed in a trio of the Wailers' self-produced numbers, and Vol. 2 adds three more to the pot -- "Satisfy My Soul," "Concrete Jungle," and "Screwface." The rest of this sumptuous set is given over to Lee Perry productions, although in a couple of cases, mistitled ones. "Love Life" is actually "Love Light," while "My Cup" parades under the peculiar title of "Make Up." The seldom-compiled "Long Long Winter" is not a hitherto unknown Wailers composition, but the group's cover of an Impressions song. So, although much of this set has appeared many times before, for collectors here's a chance to snatch up a few numbers that may have escaped them previously. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide
